Irish Off To Dayton To Face Rutgers In NCAA Tournament

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team earned its 37th NCAA Tournament appearance and 13th of the Mike Brey era on Sunday, March 13, 2022. The Irish, a 11 seed, will take part in the First Four on Wednesday, March 16, at 9:10 p.m. ET against another 11 seed, Rutgers (18-13), with the winner advancing to face No. 6 Alabama on Friday, March 18, in San Diego.

Notre Dame finished the season with a 22-10 record, a 15-5 conference mark and earned the second seed in the ACC tournament. The Irish posted victories over four teams that showed up in the 68-team field on Sunday evening (North Carolina, Kentucky, Miami (FL) and Texas A&M Corpus Christi) while earning the program’s first bid since 2016-17.

“This was a 365-day chase,” Glenn and Stacey Murphy Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Brey said after his team was selected.

They watched the selection show at his house, the same place where they sat a year ago – knowing they would not be in the field then and setting the goal of gathering again this year with a different outcome.

“To see these guys last year, a beaten down group not being a part of it, to being a part of it. We are honored. We will be there early and ready to go in Dayton. I am very proud of this group for chasing it for a year.”
