Irish Name Six Captains For 2021 Season

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Andie Aldave, Savannah Buchanan, Bridget Deehan, Maddie Howe, Samantha Lynch and Kathleen Roe will serve as captains for the Irish women’s lacrosse program in 2021, head coach Christine Halfpenny announced Monday (Feb. 22).

“We’re excited about the experience, passion, and determination that this group of women bring to the captaincy position this year,” said Halfpenny. “They have proven to be both extensions of the coaching staff and voices for the entire team. They are motivators and make everyone around them better.”

Buchanan is serving as a team captain for the third consecutive season while Aldave, Lynch and Roe were also captains for the Irish in 2020. 

“They have different leadership styles that help to connect with all of the different personalities on our team.” said Halfpenny. 

ABOUT ALDAVE
A 2020 Inside Lacrosse First Team All-American, Aldave is Notre Dame’s all-time leader with 285 draw controls through three seasons. Aldave was named a 2021 Preseason All-American by both Inside Lacrosse and U.S. Lacrosse Magazine in addition to earning a Preseason All-ACC nod. Aldave finished second on the team with 17 goals and tied for second with 23 points in seven games in 2020 while being named to the Tewaaraton Watch List for the second straight season.

ABOUT BUCHANAN
Buchanan, a 2021 Inside Lacrosse Preseason Honorable Mention All-American and All-ACC honoree, is serving as a captain for the third consecutive season. The Baltimore, Maryland, native 207 draw controls, 112 points (66G, 46A), 118 ground balls and 72 caused turnovers in 61 career games at Notre Dame. Buchanan earned Second Team All-ACC honors in both 2018 and 2019, and was named to the IWLCA All-Region Team in both 2018 (First Team) and 2019 (Second Team). 

ABOUT DEEHAN
A 2020 Inside Lacrosse First Team All-American, Deehan closed the 2020 season ranked fifth in the country with a save percentage of .547. and seventh in the nation with a goals-against average of 7.78. The Milton, Georgia, native was named U.S. Lacrosse Magazine’s Preseason Goaltender of the Year before the 2021 campaign in addition to earning Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American and Preseason All-ACC honors. Deehan was part of an Irish defensive unit that ranked second in the country with a mark of 7.29 goals allowed per game in 2020.

ABOUT HOWE
Howe is Notre Dame’s active leader with 115 goals and 152 points in 44 career games. A 2021 Preseason All-ACC honoree, Howe scored at least three goals in four of six outings last season, including four-goal efforts against Marquette, Northwestern and Central Michigan. As a sophomore in 2019, Howe led the Irish with 59 goals and 78 points en route to earning IWLCA Second Team All-American, IWLCA First Team All-Region and First Team All-ACC accolades. 

ABOUT LYNCH
Lynch has racked up 105 goals and 122 points in 58 contests throughout her Irish career, including a career-high 53 goals in 2019. The Huntington, New York, native totaled 13 goals in 2020 and notched a trio of hat tricks against Marquette, Northwestern and Ohio State. She also collected four points with a goal and career-best three assists against Boston College a season ago. A two-time ACC Honor Roll honoree, Lynch is captaining the Irish for the second consecutive season. 

ABOUT ROE
Roe, a 2021 Inside Lacrosse Preseason Honorable Mention All-American and All-ACC honoree, is serving as a team captain for the Irish for a second straight year. A season ago, Roe tied for a team-high 11 caused turnovers in seven games as part of an Irish defensive unit that ranked second in the country with a mark of 7.29 goals allowed per game. In 50 career games, Roe has amassed 68 draw controls, 63 ground balls and 61 caused turnovers for Notre Dame.
