Irish Name Four Captains for 2022

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Head coach Christin Halfpenny announced on Wednesday (Dec. 15) that Bridget Deehan, Hannah Dorney, Maddie Howe and Diana Kelly will serve as captains for the Irish women’s lacrosse program in 2022.

“We are thrilled that the team has chosen four outstanding ambassadors of the women’s lacrosse program to lead the 2022 team. Bridget Deehan, Hannah Dorney, Maddie Howe and Diana Kelly are natural leaders that have invested time, energy and passion into their time under the Dome,” said Halfpenny.  “They have earned the respect of their teammates through the strong relationships they’ve each built, the work ethic they show daily, and the love for Notre Dame Lacrosse. Their unconditional belief in achieving our goals is palpable every day we are together. They are excited and eager to get started with our journey towards Championship weekend this year.”

This will be the second season Deehan will serve as captain.

ABOUT DEEHAN

A 2021 IWLCA First Team All-American, Deehan closed the 2021 leading the conference with a mark of 9.28 saves per game in 2021 and recorded double-digit saves in nine contests. The Milton, Georgia, native named the ACC’s and IWLCA’s Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions this season and was also an Honorable Mention Inside Lacrosse All-American. Deehan finished the 2021 campaign with an ACC-leading and nationally ranked 167 saves, which is the sixth-highest single-season mark in program history.

ABOUT DORNEY

Dorney helps the Irish with 25 goals and 34 points in 40 career games. Dorney also notched a hat trick for Irish, in the 2019 NCAA Tournament and in the 2021 NCAA Tournament was part of the defensive unit that caused 10 turnovers against Robert Morris.

ABOUT HOWE

Howe is Notre Dame’s active leader with 148 goals and 198 points in 62 career games. A 2021 Preseason All-ACC honoree, Howe scored at least three goals in six outings last season. Howe earned her second straight conference honor in 2021 being named to the All-ACC Second Team (First Team – 2019). 

ABOUT KELLY

Kelly was part of the 2021 NCAA Tournament squad that defeated Virginia in the second round, and led the Irish with three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls. Kelly was named to the 2018 ACC Academic Honor Roll. In 63 career games, Kelly has picked up 77 ground balls, and caused 55 turnovers.
