Irish Multi-Events Specialists Conclude First Day Of Alabama Relays

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Notre Dame track and field multi-events student-athletes concluded their first day of the Alabama Relays at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Junior Maddie Buttinger (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection C.S.S.) is in third place with 3,338 points, while senior Justin Schneider (Atlanta, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) is in second place with 3,625 points.

Buttinger earned 750 points in the 100-meter hurdles as she ran 15.71 for a 14th-place finish in the first event of the day. In the high jump the junior claimed the crown as she jumped 1.73m to add 891 points to her score, followed by a second-place finish (11.51m) in the shot put for an additional 629 points. Buttinger concluded the final event of the day with a 12th-place finish (26.37) in the 200-meter dash to add 765 more points.

Schneider began the decathlon with a ninth-place finish and 757 points in 11.48 in the 100-meter hurdles, followed by picking up third place with a jump of 6.63m for 727 points. Schneider notched a third-place finish in the shot put as he threw 12.13m for 614 points. The senior ran 50.40 for first place in the 400-meter dash.

Sophomore Alex Bavis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) finished in 10th place (11.55) and picked up 742 points in the 100-meter hurdles, followed by finishing 18th (5.72m) in the long jump for 527 points. He finished in 13th place in the shot put as he threw 9.91m for an additional 480 points. Bavis is currently in 19th place.

Sophomore Dean Odegard (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) began the day with a 15th-place finish (11.72) in the 100-meter hurdles to add 707 points to his score. In the long jump, Odegard finished in eighth place as he jumped 6.24m for 639 points and was the 11th-place finisher (10.26m) in the shot put to add 501 points to his score. Odegard finished the 400 meters in seventh place (52.24) and concluded the day in seventh place with 3,240 points.

The multi-events student-athletes conclude competition Friday. The sprinters, jumpers and throwers compete at the Arizona State Invitational, while the middle distance and distance runners take to the track at the Stanford Invitational, both of those meets are Friday and Saturday.
