GREENSBORO, N.C. – Day three of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship looked awfully familiar to the University of Notre Dame men’s swimming team. A total of five school records were achieved on Friday night, and the Irish moved into fourth place with 652 points after winning their first two gold medals at the conference championship meet at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Notre Dame has broken a total of 10 university marks during the first three days of competition, including multiple events that saw record times in both preliminary and finals heats.

Two-time All-American Frank Dyer continued his standout ACC Championship performance with the first Notre Dame event win in meet history. Dyer reset his own program best in the 200 freestyle during the race finals, clocking an NCAA A-cut swim of 1:33.20 to take the win by nearly one full second over North Carolina State’s David Williams. The winning time was Dyer’s fifth program record heat of the weekend, including relays, to pace the Notre Dame lineup.

After breaking the team record with a preliminary swim of 52.79 in the 100 breaststroke morning slate, All-American Zach Stephens wasted little time in joining Dyer atop the podium Friday night. A finals readout of 52.59 set the ACC Championship record in the distance, and gave Stephens his first gold medal and second all-conference citation of the meet. Stephens earned second team all-ACC honors in the 200 IM on Thursday night.

The finals session began with the third Irish relay team to earn an NCAA A-cut during the championships in the 400 medley relay entry. Matthew Buerger, Cameron Miller, John Williamson and Stephens surpassed the team record in the event by nearly two seconds, touching the wall in 3:09.50 to finish in fifth place. Buerger also set the fastest time in team history during his 100 backstroke split, clocking a blazing 47.17 to best his preliminary school record time of 47.53 from earlier in the day.

Tom Anderson opened the preliminary event portion of Friday’s meet by improving upon his own Notre Dame record in the 400 IM, clocking a 3:45.82 to qualify fifth for the event finals. An evening swim of 3:47.02 earned the Irish freshman a fifth place finish.

The 2014 ACC Championship will come to a close on Saturday, with the preliminary heats for the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly set to begin at 11 a.m. All championship information, including a full event schedule and live results, can be found at the official championship website,
