Irish Men Swimmers in Third After Day One of BIG EAST Meet

Long Island, N.Y. – The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team is in third place after day one of the 2000 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships in Long Island, N.Y. The Irish have 134 points and trail Pittsburgh, who is in first with 256.50 points, and Rutgers (146).

Notre Dame did not have any event winners Thursday, but sophomore Jonathan Pierce placed second in the 500 freestyle in a school record time of 4:30.96. Pierce broke the old school record of 4:31.41 set by John Lubker last season. Lubker finished ninth in the race with a time of 4:34.40.

Senior diver Herb Huesman continued his comeback from injury placing fourth in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 477.90. Huesman missed the entire 1999 season after having a tumor removed from his rib cage. Freshman Andy Maggio was sixth with 454.70 points and Tony Xie was 14th with 336.80 points.

Irish senior Ray Fitzpatrick placed fifth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.78. Fitzpatrick tied his school record of 20.73 in the morning preliminary session.

Fitzpatrick also anchored the 400 medley relay team that placed fourth in a time of 3:21.66. Other swimmers on the team included juniors Brian Skorney, Dan Szilier and Ryan Verlin.

The 2000 BIG EAST Championships continue Friday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m.
