Irish Men Send Three More To NCAA Championships On Friday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Fighting Irish track and field men’s squad completed their stay at the NCAA East Regionals on Friday, sending four athletes to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon over the course of the meet.

Yared Nuguse moved one step closer to defending his NCAA title in the 1,500m, as he placed second in the regional finals with a time of 3:36.85 to advance to the NCAA Championships. Nuguse won a thrilling 1,500m race earlier this season at Hayward Field, the historic track that will host the 2021 NCAA Championships.

After finishing fourth at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 800m, Samuel Voelz will be heading to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June after qualifying on Thursday with a time of 1:48.13. Voelz won his heat and finished fifth overall in the event.

Dylan Jacobs closed out the men’s competition at the NCAA Regionals in fashion for the Irish, producing a second-place finish in his heat in the 5,000m race with a time of 13:48.55 to earn a trip to the NCAA Championships. Jacobs finished ninth overall in the event.

The other Irish men’s athlete to qualify for the championships is Michael Shoaf, who earned the distinction on Wednesday in the shot put.

The fourth and final day of the NCAA East Regionals in Jacksonville will feature the women’s event finals. Notre Dame’s Madison Schmidt gets the team going on Saturday, May 29 with the high jump at 1 p.m. ET.
