Irish Men Finish Third And Women Finish Sixth At The NCAA Regional

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The University of Notre Dame men’s cross country team finished third, while the women’s team concluded the race in sixth-place at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course in Rochester, Mich.

The men totaled 117 points and trailed Wisconsin (32) and Indiana (76).

Senior Dan Jackson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) led the Irish, finishing in fourth-place in 30:31.11. Jackson earned all-region honors along with sophomore Jeremy Rae (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lakeshore Catholic) who finished in 16th place in 30:42.01. Junior Jordan Carlson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Rosemount) completed the circuit in 30:51.30, also earning all-region honors for a 22nd-place finish

Junior Johnathan Shawel (Placentia, Calif./Placentia) completed the ten-kilometer race in 31:18.36 for 35th place, while freshman Martin Grady (Burr Ridge, Ill./Fenwick) finished 40th in 31:22.08.

Junior Joe Miller (Bowling Green, Ohio/St. John’s Jesuit) and senior Mat Abernethy (College Park, Md./Georgetown Prep.) rounded out the Irish line up. Miller crossed the line in 31:43.98 for 57th place and Abernethy ran for 139th place in 33:24.02.

On the women’s side, Michigan State, Michigan and Toledo claimed the top-three spots at the meet. Michigan State scored 80 points, followed by Michigan (96) and Toledo (130).

Freshman Alexa Aragon (Billings, Mont./Billings Senior) was the top Irish finisher stopping the clock in 21:25.22 for 22nd place for a all-region honor, followed by junior Rachel Velarde (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado) who finished 41st in 21:43.83.

Senior Erica Watson (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville), freshmen Kelly Curran (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) and Meg Ryan (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) finished in 45th, 48th and 51st, respectively. Watson clocked in at 21:47.16, Curran in 21:48.56 and Ryan crossed the line in 21:50.73.

Sophomore Rebecca Tracy (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and senior Molly Hirt (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North) completed the circuit in 22:10.81 and 22:43.22, in that order. Tracy concluded the contest in 69th place, while Hirt finished in 102nd place.

Jackson will compete in the NCAA Championship on Saturday, November 11 in Terre Haute, Ind. at noon (ET).
