VILLANOVA, Pa. – The University of Notre Dame men’s track and field team finished second, while the women placed 10th at the BIG EAST Championship Sunday at the Jumbo Elliott Track at Villanova Stadium in Villanova, Pa. The men’s second-place finish marks the ninth time in 10 seasons to finish in the top two spots.

The Connecticut men won the league contest with 141 points, followed by Notre Dame with 133 points and Louisville with 99 points. The Louisville women claimed the crown with 117 points, West Virginia placed second with 107 points, and Connecticut was the third-place finisher (89 points).

Sophomore Jeremy Rae claimed the 1,500-meter crown in 3:46.38 and Johnathan Shawel finished in second place in 3:46.97. Patrick Feeney was the individual winner in the 400-meter dash as the freshman ran 47.27 to earn his second all-BIG EAST honor, having won the 400-meter dash at the 2011 BIG EAST Indoor Championship.

The 4×800-meter relay team comprised of Kevin Labus, Shawel, Rae and Jack Howard notched a first-place finish in 7:24.91, while Howard went on to win the 800-meter dash in 1:48.24. Howard is the first Irish member to win the event.

Kevin Schipper extended the “Schipper streak” in the pole vault to three seasons as the junior cleared 5.25m Sunday and has won the event the past two seasons, while his brother Matt Schipper won the event in 2009.

The Irish return to action May 13 when the squad splits up to compete at the Cardinal Twilight meet in Louisville, Ky., the Georgia Tech Last Chance meet in Atlanta, Ga. and the ICAAAA Championships in Bloomington, Ind.

Women’s Results:

1,500-meter run: Rebecca Tracy finished in third place in 4:25.64.

100-meter hurdles: Nevada Sorenson finished in fourth place in 13.90.

400-meter dash: Michelle Brown placed fourth in 54.38.

5,000-meter run: Molly Hirt finished 12th in 17:20.70, followed by Meg Ryan in 15th place in 17:26.00 and Rachel Velarde finished 17th in 17:30.15.

400-meter hurdles: Megan Yanik finished in sixth place in 1:00.30.

4×400-meter relay: Notre Dame (Megan Yanik, Sasha Blanchard, Michelle Brown, Allison Schroeder) finished in 11th place in 3:46.03.

4×800-meter relay: Notre Dame (Abby Higgins, Kelly Curran, McKinzie Schulz, Alexa Aragon) placed fourth in 8:51.63.

High Jump: Maddie Buttinger placed sixth (1.70m).

Triple Jump: Jasmine Williams placed ninth (12.08m) and Kelly Burke finished 15th (11.65m).

Hammer Throw: Madeline Casanova placed seventh (51.39m) and Vivien Devaney finished 13th (48.44m).

Javelin Throw: Amanda Chamblee placed eighth (41.12m).

Discus Throw: Vivien Devaney finished eighth (45.10m) and Madeline Casanova placed 11th (43.13m).

Men’s Results:

1,500-meter run: Jeremy Rae claimed the crown in 3:46.38, followed by Johnathan Shawel in second place in 3:46.97 and J.P. Malette in fifth place in 3:47.87.

400-meter dash: Patrick Feeney was the first-place finisher in 47.27, followed by Edward Hitchler in seventh place in 48.71 and Brendan Dougherty in eighth place in 49.04.

100-meter dash: Miklos Szebeny finished seventh in 10.74.

800-meter run: Jack Howard placed first in 1:48.24.

200-meter dash: Miklos Szebeny finished in seventh place in 21.65.

5,000-meter run: Dan Jackson placed 10th in 14:37.84, followed by Kelly Lynch in 18th place in 14:55.92 and Ryan Gamboa placed 18th in 14:55.92.

4×100-meter relay: Notre Dame (Jarrod Buchanan, Miklos Szebeny, Patrick Feeney, Edward Hitchler) finished in fifth place in 41.43.

4×400-meter relay: Notre Dame (Hitchler, Dougherty, Buchanan, Feeney) placed sixth in 3:12.50.

4×800-meter relay: Notre Dame (Kevin Labus, Johnathan Shawel, Jeremy Rae, Jack Howard) was the first-place finisher in 7:24.91.

Pole Vault: Kevin Schipper was the first-place finisher (5.25m), followed by Andrew Kolbeck in fourth place (4.80m).

Triple Jump: Logan Renwick finished in fifth place (15.06m).

Discus Throw: David Anderson placed eighth (47.59m) and Anthony Thomas finished in 11th place (46.05m).

High Jump: Doug Onuscheck placed sixth (1.99m).
