Notre Dame, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame track and field program welcomed the 14 other teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference on Thursday for the first day of the ACC Indoor Championships in the Loftus Sports Center.
With many of the team’s top performers competing in the weight throw and distance medley relay events, the Irish took home hardware in three different events and finished the day in second place in the women’s team standings and first place in the men’s team standings.
The women’s weight throw was the first event of the day that the Irish competed in. Rachel Tanczos and Abbey Kapitan entered the day ranked first and fifth, respectively, in the country in the event and they each delivered another strong performance at the ACC Championships. Tanczos finished second with a mark of 22.39m and Kapitan placed third with a mark of 21.87m to get the Irish on the board for the women’s team score.
On the men’s side, Logan Kusky came into the meet ranked second in the conference in the weight throw, and he did not disappoint. The senior posted a mark of 20.75m to win and claim back-to-back conference titles in the event.
The men’s DMR team was coming off an all-time performance at the Alex Wilson Invitational where they posted the second-fastest time (9:25.80) in NCAA indoor track and field history. They followed it up on Thursday with an ACC title of their own. The team of Jake Renfree, Edward Cheatham, Sam Voelz and Yared Nuguse cruised to victory with a time of 9:43.55 to capture Notre Dame’s second ACC Championship in a row in the men’s DMR.
The meet picks back up on Friday with the second day of the ACC Indoor Championships set to start at 11 a.m. ET inside the Loftus Sports Center.
