Irish Looking for 400th All-Time Dual Win At Northwestern Invitational

Jan. 31, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team will be looking to make program history this weekend at the Northwestern Invitational inside the Norris Aquatics Center in Evanston, Ill.

The Irish (7-1) will face host Northwestern, Iowa and Missouri State in a quad-dual format, with session one beginning Friday at 6 p.m. (ET). Saturday will be split into a pair of sessions, with the morning events set to commence at 11 a.m. (ET), followed by the third and final group of races at 6 p.m. (ET).

Notre Dame enters the competition two dual wins shy of reaching the 400-victory plateau in program history (398-262-1).

“This weekend will be a three-session meet, mimicking the NCAA Championship format,” Irish head coach Tim Welsh says. “One of the reasons we are looking forward to the Northwestern Invitational is so we can prepare for championship competition.”

Notre Dame has fared well in recent showdowns with Iowa and Northwestern. The Irish scored 794 points to claim runner-up honors behind overall champion Michigan at the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational Dec. 2. The Hawkeyes checked in just behind Notre Dame in third place (606 points).

The Irish defeated Northwestern 157-143 in a competitive dual contest at the Rolfs Aquatic Center on Jan. 14 of last year. Frank Dyer (200 and 500 free), Kevin Overholt (50 and 100 free) and Michael Kreft (1 and 3-meter dive) were double winners in aiding the winning Notre Dame cause.

This weekend marks the first time that the Irish and Missouri State will compete in a regular season meet.
