Irish Lacrosse Readies for Weekend in the Big Apple

Oct. 5, 2016

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame lacrosse program has been busy this fall, as the team has teamed up with a famed musician in Todd Rundgren at Dickinson Intermediate Fine Arts Academy and hosted a number of scrimmages including the annual Steak & Hot Dog Game.

However, one of the focal points of the fall schedule is the team trip to New York City which occurs this weekend from Oct. 7-9.

“In the short time we are in New York we are going to play two games against other collegiate teams, have a reception with parents and alumni, play an alumni game in the Bronx and we are going to do a service project with Harlem Lacrosse and CityLax in the city of New York,” said Corrigan. “It makes for a busy weekend but one that I hope brings in a lot of the elements that we think are important for our guys.”

The weekend will be packed with games and events, as the team will take the field three times for competitions and also host a clinic.

The Irish will land in La Guardia late Friday evening and then head to a hotel on Long Island for the night.

Saturday’s main events will be two scrimmages against Navy and Stony Brook at Stony Brook University. Notre Dame’s first matchup will be against the Navy Midshipmen at noon followed by a contest against Stony Brook at 2 p.m.

The lacrosse games are just a part of a weekend focused on building character, culture and community. The Irish are also partnering up with CityLax and Harlem Lacrosse to put on a Players/Coaches Clinic in the Bronx at Cardinal Spellman High School. More than 100+ attendees are expected to attend the camp.

CityLax uses a public-private partnership model to develop/expand the game of lacrosse inside the New York City public schools, for more info on the organization click here. Harlem Lacrosse is a school-based non-profit organization that changes the life trajectories of at-risk youth through daily wrap-around academic support, mentoring, leadership training, college readiness career exploration, admissions counseling and lacrosse instruction. Afterwards the team will have a chance to connect with former members of the Notre Dame lacrosse team in the Alumni Game, which will also be played at Cardinal Spellman High School. The Alumni Game will be a chance for current members of the team to network, as many of the alums have careers working in the top firms and companies across the country in a wide variety of industries.

Plenty of action and celebrations are expected to center around the Alumni Game, as there will be live music, food trucks and tailgates after the competition. Other unique New York staples the team will experience over the weekend include stops at Zucker Bagels courtesy of Notre Dame alum Dan Pace ’83 and stops at Long Island delis.

The annual fall trip has always been a cornerstone of the Notre Dame Fall Lacrosse Experience, as the team has also travelled to destinations such as Denver, Seattle, San Francisco, etc.
