Irish Kick Off Indoor Season at Blue and Gold Meet

NOTRE DAME, ind. – The Irish track and field squads kicked off the indoor season on a high note Friday as Notre Dame set 48 BIG EAST qualifying marks at the Blue and Gold Meet held in the Loftus Sports Center.

Women’s High Jump: Marquette’s Erynn James earned the top spot with a mark of 1.73m. Kendra Jennings finished second at 1.68m, followed by Marisa Handley in third at 1.58m. James and Jennings both hit BIG EAST qualifying marks.

Men’s High Jump: Doug Onuscheck was the top jumper with a mark of 1.96m. Marquette’s Cheldon Brown finished second at 1.91m, while Ted Glasnow and Alex Bavis tied for third at 1.81m. Dean Odegard was fifth with a mark of 1.76m. All four jumpers qualified for the BIG EAST Championships.

Women’s Long Jump: The Irish took the top three spots as Maddie Buttinger finished first with a jump of 5.26m. Jaime Minor was second at 5.12m, followed by Jasmine Williams in third at 5.03m. DePaul’s Ivy Moffett was fourth at 5.02m, Detroit Mercy’s Susan Kalkstein was fifth with a mark of 4.96m, the Titans’ Bri Soule finished sixth at 4.89m and Ashley Schinske, of Detroit Mercy, finished seventh at 4.84m. Lauren Leniart was eighth at 4.76m, DePaul’s Brittany Lewis finished ninth with a jump of 4.74m, Marquette’s Alyssa Davis was 10th at 4.65m and DePaul’s Cynthia Edwards was 11th at 4.29m.

Men’s Long Jump: Eric Quick was the top jumper with a mark of 7.04m. DePaul’s Joseph Strawder finished second at 6.87m, followed by Marquette’s Shawn McLarney in third at 6.79m and DePaul’s Eddie Anderson in fourth with a jump of 6.46m. Connor Paladino recorded a mark of 6.28m to finish fifth and Ted Glasnow was sixth at 6.20m. Quick, Strawder and McLarney all qualified for the BIG EAST Championships.

Women’s Triple Jump: Jaime Minor qualified for the BIG EAST meet with a first-place jump of 11.30m. Marquette’s Alyssa Davis also qualified for the league meet with a second-place mark of 11.24m. Jasmine Williams finished third at 10.94m, Detroit Mercy’s Susan Kalkstein was fourth at 10.88m, Lauren Leniart finished fifth at 10.27m and DePaul’s Cynthia Edwards was sixth at 10.07m.

Men’s Triple Jump: DePaul’s Joseph Strawder qualified for the BIG EAST with a first-place jump of 14.30m. Eric Quick also qualified for the conference meet, finishing second at 13.86m. Patrick Glass finished third with a mark of 13.10m, followed by DePaul’s Eddie Anderson in fourth at 13.04m and Doug Onuscheck was fifth at 12.69m.

Women’s Pole Vault: Marquette’s Carrie Schmid and Chrissy Finkel tied for the top spot with a mark of 3.40m. Jessica Sullivan finished third at 3.40m, Ann Polcari was fourth at 3.25m, Marquette’s Lauren Darnall was fifth at 3.25m and Rikki Lynn London finished sixth with a mark of 3.10m. Schmid, Finkel and Sulllivan all recorded BIG EAST marks.

Men’s Pole Vault: Irish vaulters took the top five spots with four earning BIG EAST qualifying marks. Kevin Schipper was the top finisher with a mark of 5.05m, followed by Matt Schipper in second at 4.80m. Jim Merchun finished third at 4.50m, followed by Andrew Kolbeck in fourth at 4.35m and Dean Odegard in fifth with a mark of 3.90m. Marquette’s Ron Vick also finished fifth at 3.90m.

Women’s Weight Throw: Detroit Mercy’s Brittany Horne was the top thrower with a mark of 17.10m. DePaul’s Alanna Kovacs was second at 14.76m, followed by Rudy Atang in third at 14.61m. Marquette’s Rachel Thiel finished fourth with a mark of 14.36m, DePaul’s Katie McFabe was fifth at 14.33m, Ginny McFabe, of DePaul, was sixth at 14.19m and Marquette’s Kelly Corcoran was seventh with a mark of 14.09m. Madeline Casanova finished eighth at 13.39m and Mason Bashaw was ninth with a toss of 12.88m.

Men’s Weight Throw: DePaul’s Brad Miller took the top spot with a toss of 18.42m, followed by Notre Dame’s Greg Davis in second at 17.62m and Marquette’s Jeff Kluge in third with a mark of 17.26m. Mitchell Gormley finished fourth at 17.25m, John Belcher was fifth with a mark of 16.37m and Denes Veres finished sixth at 16.32m. Marquette’s Jonathan Kusowski finished seventh in 15.83m, Andrew Hills was eighth in 15.55m, Michael Smigelski finished ninth with a toss of 14.56m and DePaul’s Matt Babicz was 10th at 14.19m. Marquette’s Eric Matuszewski was 11th in 13.41m and Patrick Stuart, of Marquette, finished 12th with a mark of 12.30m. The top eight finishers including Irish throwers Davis, Gormley, Belcher, Veres and Hills are registered BIG EAST qualifying marks.

Women’s Shot Put: Marquette’s Rachel Thiel hit 14.12m to win the event, followed by Jaclyn Espinoza in second at 13.64m and Rudy Atang in third at 13.20m. Detroit Mercy’s Brittany Horne was fourth at 13.10m, DePaul’s Alanna Kovacs finished fifth at 12.99m, Madeline Casanova was sixth with a mark of 12.05m, DePaul’s Ebonie Cobb finished seventh at 11.80m, Maddie Buttinger recorded a mark of 11.08m to finish eighth and Mason Bashaw was ninth at 10.35m.

Men’s Shot Put: Sheldon Battle, unattached, won the event with a mark of 20.38m, followed by Jake Madonia, unattached, finished second at 17.46m. Denes Veres was third at 16.35m, John Belcher finished fourth with a toss of 16.29m and Andrew Hills was fifth at 16.11m. Marquette’s Eric Matuszewski was sixth at 14.63m, Greg Davis finished seventh at 14.32m, DePaul’s Matt Babicz was eighth with a throw of 13.42m and Marquette’s Joseph Kohut was ninth at 13.07m. Anthony Thomas finished 10th with of throw 12.51m, Marquette’s Patrick Stuart was 11th at 12.37m, Ted Glasnow finished 12th at 10.84m, Alex Bavis was 13th at 8.98m and Dean Odegard finished 14th with a toss of 8.74m. The top six throwers set BIG EAST qualifying marks.

Women’s 60m Hurdles: Irish sprinters took the top four places with Kali Watkins earning the top spot and a BIG EAST qualifying mark at 8.56. Nevada Sorenson finished second and also qualified for the BIG EAST with a time of 8.57. Sasha Blanchard was third in 9.19 and Maddie Buttinger was fourth in 9.33. Detroit Mercy’s Sharonda Vesey was fifth with a time of 9.82, Marquette’s Ri’ana Johnson finished sixth in 9.94 and Amanda Campbell, of Detroit Mercy, was seventh with a time of 10.35.

Men’s 60m Hurdles: Detroit Mercy runners took four of the five spots with Aviram Campbell coming in first at 8.47. Vincent Lefler was second with a time of 8.87, Taylor Hennrick finished third in 8.91 and Anthony Donald was fourth with a mark of 9.38. Marquette’s Parker Farabee finished fifth with a time of 9.45.

Women’s 1,000m: DePaul’s Mary Cate Quiett won the event and qualified for the BIG EAST Championships with a time of 2:52.83. Rachel Boggs was second in 3:03.45, followed by Detroit Mercy’s Katie Weishaar in third at 3:04.26. DePaul’s Kelly Pickering finished fourth with a time of 3:04.55, Detroit Mercy’s Jennifer DeFauw was fifth at 3:05.47 and DePaul’s Courtney Avvampato was sixth in 3:07.09. Detroit Mercy’s Tressanique Hampton (3:08.20), Kirstin Mooney (3:08.20) and Sarah Martinez (3:15.62) finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively, while Maruqette’s Alyssa Stevens was 10th in 3:15.96.

Men’s 1000m: Notre Dame claimed the top five spots, as well as five BIG EAST qualifications, with Blake Choplin coming in first at 2:28.18. Jack Howard was second in 2:28.24, Cameron Eckert was third with a time of 2:28.35, Jeremy Rae finished fourth in 2:28.36 and Kevin Labus was fifth with a mark of 2:28.58. DePaul’s Maxwell Clink finished sixth in 2:30.16, followed by Mitch Lorenz in seventh at 2:30.79 and Marquette’s Mike McCarthy in eighth with a time of 2:31.62. Trent Sayers was ninth in 2:32.60, Marquette’s Benjamin Schmitz finished 10th in 2:34.90, DePaul’s Chris Gallardo finished 11th with a time of 2:36.70 and Tyler Schmitt, of DePaul, was 12th in 2:38.42.

Women’s 60m: Nevada Sorenson was the top finisher with a time of 7.88, followed by DePaul’s Idia Omogiate in second at 7.89 and Marquette’s Chanel Franklin in third with a mark of 8.02. Jaime Minor was fourth in 8.06, Marquette’s Naana Mensah was fifth at 8.21 and Detroit Mercy’s Amanda Hollern finished sixth in 8.21. Nikia Duncan, of Detroit Mercy, was the seventh runner to cross the line in 8.22, followed by DePaul’s Brigid Geary in eighth at 8.28, DePaul’s Aforo Okraku in ninth at 8.38 and Marquette’s Ri’ana Johnson in 10th with a time of 8.55.

Men’s 60m: Detroit Mercy’s Earnest Cleary earned the top spot with a time of 6.86. DePaul’s Chris Kyles finished second and qualified for the BIG EAST meet with a time of 6.97. Detroit Mercy’s Vushaun Landrum finished third in 7.03, Deonte Osayande, of Detroit Mercy, was fourth in 7.11, Eric Quick finished fifth with a time of 7.20 and Marquette’s Shawn McLarney was sixth at 7.25. DePaul’s Tristan Stagger (7.25) and Cameron Bretl (7.40) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Women’s 400m: DePaul’s Lindsey Holden was the top finisher with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 57.23. Detroit Mercy’s Sequoyia Calhoun finished second in 57.81, and Ericka Nowell was third in 59.16. Depaul’s Kelcie Daniels was fourth in 1:01.26, followed by Brittany Thomas, of DePaul, in fifth at 1:03.53 and Detroit Mercy’s Melissa Zuteck in sixth at 1:03.67. Lindsay Smetzler, of Detroit Mercy, finished seventh with a time of 1:04.04, DePaul’s Kourtnee Moore was eighth with a time of 1:04.12 and Corrie Castro, of DePaul, was ninth in 1:05.30.

Men’s 400m: Detroit Mercy’s Lesley Hanna finished first with a time of 48.93, followed by Edward Hitchler in second at 49.34 and Alex Korenstra in third at 49.56. Jordan Rincon finished fourth in 49.99, DePaul’s Gilbert Lifton was fifth in 49.99, Brendan Dougherty finished sixth at 50.68 and Marquette’s Tyler O’Brien was seventh with a time of 50.96. Eric Roth clocked in at 51.06 to finish eighth, DePaul’s Jamil Chammas was ninth in 51.25, Detroit Mercy’s Joe LaRocca was 10th at 51.25 and Ronnie Kadykowski finished 11th in 51.78. DePaul’s Matt Holland finished 12th in 21.85, Marquette’s Jeff Pugh was 13th with a time of 52.97, DePaul’s Goz Anyadiegwu finished 15th in 54.86 and the Blue Demons’ Ryan Bosman was 16th, clocking in at 55.68.

Women’s Mile: Abby Higgins was the top finisher and registered a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 5:06.38. Molly Sullivan finished second at 5:08.56 and Cari Krikorian was third in 5:43.81.

Men’s Mile: Marquette’s Jack Hackett finished first with a time of 4:12.54, followed by Randall Babb in second at 4:12.61 and DePaul’s Greg Udzielak in third at 4:13.22. Zac Suriano finished fourth with a time of 4:26.43, Marquette’s Patrick Maag was fifth in 4:29.43 and the Golden Eagles’ Evan Ross was sixth in 4:30.24. Marquette’s Jon Newman finished seventh with a time of 4:30.77, Tyler Barlow was eighth in 4:33.67, Marquette’s Taylor Peliska 4:34.56, DePaul’s Dennis Baliga finished 10th in 4:41.85, Marquette’s Sam Magnuson was 11th in 4:42.50 and Kevin Hendrickson finished 12th with a time of 4:45.12. The top three finishers earned BIG EAST qualifying marks.

Women’s 500m: The Irish took the top three spots with BIG EAST qualifying times. Joanna Schultz was first with a time of 1:13.27, followed by Natalie Johnson in second at 1:14.20 and Samantha Williams in third at 1:14.32. Marquette’s Jenny Zahn finished fourth in 1:19.33, Detroit Mercy’s Megan Miller was fifth with a time of 1:20.30 and Maddie Buttinger finished sixth at 1:20.55. Marquette’s Melissa Burghardt finished seventh in 1:22.99, the Golden Eagles’ Christine Hansen was eighth in 1:23.16, Detroit Mercy’s Ashley Schinske was ninth with a time of 1:24.00 and Marquette’s Reilly Hall was 10th in 1:25.16. Detroit Mercy’s Olivia Smid (1:25.85), Amanda Campbell (1:25.89) and Sharonda Vesey (1:26.03) finished 11th, 12th and 13th, while DePaul’s Laura Wilson (1:26.08) and Lauren Bales (1:27.64) finished 14th and 15th.

Men’s 500m: Marquette’s Kyle Winter won the event with a time of 1:04.50. Matthew Brown was second at 1:04.62 and Balazs Molnar was third in 1:05.13. Marquette’s Michael O’Brien finished fourth in 1:05.45, Detroit Mercy’s Vincent Lefler was fifth in 1:09.54 and the Golden Eagles’ Randey Fisher finished sixth with a time of 1:09.98. Detroit Mercy’s Anthony Donald clocked in at 1:10.71 to finish seventh, while the Titans’ Aviram Campbell was eighth at 1:13.08. Marquette’s Parker Farabee finished ninth with a time of 1:14.83 and Detroit Mercy’s Taylor Hennrick was 10th at 1:15.04. Winter, Brown and Molnar all qualified for the BIG EAST Championships.

Men’s 5000 Meters: Jake Walker the top finisher with a time of 14:26.64. Dan Jackson was second at 14:36.44 and Detroit Mercy’s Patrick Liederbach was third in 14:37.12. Paul Springer finished fourth with a time of 14:44.97, Matt Abernethy finished fifth in 15:24.61 and Detroit Mercy’s Alexander Harris was sixth at 15:28.20. Thomas Noel finished seventh in 15:31.55, Detroit Mercy’s Alex Vanias finished eighth with a time of 15:40.94, the Titans’ Derek Hoerman was ninth in 15:58.20 and Kyle Higdon finished 10th with a time of 16:06.92. The top four finishers all qualified for the BIG EAST.

Women’s 800m: Kelly Langhans took the top spot with a time of 2:13.51, followed by Allison Schroeder in second at 2:15.28 and Marquette’s Sarah Verdoliva in third with a time of 2:15.56. Angela Ryck finished fourth in 2:21.20, DePaul’s Toni Salvatori was fifth in 2:21.55 and Anne McCarthy finished sixth with a time of 2:22.79. Langhans, Schroeder and Verdoliva all recorded BIG EAST qualifying times.

Men’s 800m: Brier Steenberge won the event with a time of 1:57.34, followed by DePaul’s Edin Pasalic in second at 1:57.52 and Max Cruz in third at 1:58.37. Marquette’s Billy Schlottke was fourth in 1:59.95, Detroit Mercy’s Chris Smalley finished fifth in 2:00.16, DePaul’s Matt Pietrus finished sixth in 2:01.14, the Blue Demons’ Drew Edwards clocked in at 2:03.30 to finish seventh and DePaul’s Daniel Steinfels was eighth in 2:04.00.

Women’s 200m: Marquette’s Chanel Franklin was the top finisher with a tiem of 25.67, followed by DePaul’s Idia Omogiate in second at 25.87 and the Blue Demons’ Ivy Moffett in third at 26.19. DePaul’s Brittany Lewis was fourth with a time of 26.40, Detroit Mercy’s Bri Soule was fifth at 27.20, the Titans’ Amanda Hollern finished sixth in 27.23 and Detroit Mercy’s Nikia Duncan clocked in at 27.24 to finish seventh. Marquette’s Naana Mensah was eighth in 27.29, followed by DePaul’s Alexandria Dunson (27.51), Aforo Okraku (27.76) and Brigid Geary (28.20) in ninth, 10th and 11th, respectively.

Men’s 200m: Marquette’s Tyler O’Brien won the event with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 22.10. Detroit Mercy’s Vushaun Landrum finished second in 22.62, followed by Tyrell Atkins in third with a time of 22.70, Detroit Mercy’s Earnest Cleary was fourth in 22.71 and DePaul’s Chris Kyles finished fifth in 22.73. The Titans’ Deonte Osayande finished sixth with a time of 22.74, DePaul’s Tristan Stagger was seventh in 23.34 and Sean Lindbloom finished eighth with a time of 23.52.

Women’s 3000m: Marissa Treece set a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 9:56.52 to win the event. DePaul’s Terah Cheatham finished second at 10:06.42, Kari Johnson was third at 10:19.97, DePaul’s Stephanie Hughes finished fourth with a time of 10:21.48 and Susanna Sullivan was fifth at 10:23.08. Alissa Ott clocked in at 10:26.18 to finish sixth, Elizabeth Barron was seventh in 10:29.10, DePaul’s Claire O’Brien was eighth in 10:39.48 and Detroit Mercy’s Alexandria Vintevoghel was ninth with a time of 10:57.05. The Titans’ Beata Gorzynska finished 10th in 10:58.39, DePaul’s Kelsey Dolan was 11th in 11:06.72, Detroit Mercy’s Stephanie Rossman finished 12th in 11:07.83, DePaul’s Stacy Schmitz was 13th in 11:11.39 and Detroit Mercy’s Kristina Arko finished 14th with a time of 11:30.56.

Men’s 3000m: Joe Milller won the event with a time of 8:21.10, followed by DePaul’s Matthew Graham in second at 8:21.15, Jordan Carlson in third at 8:21.70, J.P. Malette was fourth in 8:23.78 and Kelly Lynch finished fifth with a time of 8:25.18. Ryan Gamboa was sixth at 8:27.17, Marquette’s Spencer Agnew finished seventh in 8:31.42, Johnathan Shawel was eighth in 8:34.26, DePaul’s Max Rodrigues finished ninth in 8:53.47 and the Blue Demons’ Brian Begalke finished 10th with a time of 9:06.05.

Women’s 4x400m Relay: Notre Dame’s B squad took the top time at 3:45.39, followed by the Irish A team at 3:57.11. Detroit Mercy A finished third at 4:05.55, Notre Dame C was fourth at 4:05.90 and DePaul A was fifth at 4:06.80. DePaul’s B team finished sixth at 4:07.81, Marquette A was seventh in 4:09.02, Detroit Mercy D finished eighth in 4:13.29 and the Titans’ B was ninth with a time of 4:19.85. DePaul’s C squad finished 10th in 4:26.36 and Detroit Mercy C finished 11th in 4:27.91.

Men’s 4x400m Relay: The Notre Dame `B’ squad finished first with a time of 3:22.92, followed by the Irish E team in second at 9:23.36. Notre Dame A was third at 3:23.61, DePaul A finished fourth at 3:23.99 and Detroit Mercy A finished fifth with a time of 3:24.96. Marquette A finished sixth in 3:25.04, Notre Dame D was seventh in 3:28.86, Notre Dame C was eighth with a time of 3:30.13, Detroit Mercy B finished ninth in 3:34.35 and DePaul C finished 10th in 3:37.22.

The Irish will host the Notre Dame Indoor Opener at the Loftus Jan. 15.
