Irish In Third Place After Two Rounds At Boilermaker Invitational

April 8, 2006

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Battling a combination of cold, windy conditions and a tricky course, the Notre Dame men’s golf team rose to the challenge, carding a 31-over par 607 (307-300) and moving into third place following Saturday’s first two rounds of the Boilermaker Invitational. The Irish are 19 strokes behind tournament leader Indiana (588) and nine back of the host school, Purdue (598), but find themselves ahead of No. 16 Minnesota (10th place, 618) and 23rd-ranked Northwestern (sixth place, 614), as well as new BIG EAST Conference member Louisville (fourth place, 608). The two-day tournament, which features many of the top teams in the Midwest District, is being contested on the par 72, 7,083-yard Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.

Junior tri-captain Cole Isban (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian) is among three players tied for second place through 36 holes after firing a two-over par 146 (74-72) on Saturday. Indiana’s Jorge Campillo is the overnight leader at the Boilermaker Invitational with an even-par 144, while IU’s Drew Allenspach and Seth Brandon join Isban in the runner-up position heading into Sunday’s final round.

Freshman Josh Sandman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) is only seven shots off the pace after two rounds, standing in a tie for 15th place at seven-over par 151 (77-74). Sandman, who missed the fall season with a back injury, is playing in just his second tournament as a collegian, having tied for 25th at last weekend’s Augusta State Invitational (219, +3).

Senior tri-captain Scott Gustafson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) stumbled during the opening round, but recovered a bit in the afternoon and is in a 31st-place tie at 12-over par 156 (80-76). His classmate and fellow captain Mark Baldwin (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton Prep) had a similar fate with a slow start, currently residing in a tie for 41st place at 14-over par 158 (80-78). Junior Adam Gifford (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth), making his season debut for the Irish and his third career start as a member of the travel squad, had the team’s second-best round in the morning, but fell back in the second session and is among a group tied for 47th place at 15-over par 159 (76-83).

Notre Dame will close out play at the Boilermaker Invitational on Sunday, with the first tee times slated for 8 a.m. (ET), although those could be delayed with more cold temperatures expected overnight. Final results will be available on the official Notre Dame athletics web site (www.und.com) and the Irish Sports Hotline (574-631-3000) upon completion of the day’s action.
