Irish In Third After Second Round Of The BIG EAST Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Senior Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) paced the Fighting Irish women’s golf team on day two of the 2010 BIG EAST Championship, as she turned in an even-par 72 on Monday afternoon at the Innisbrook Resort’s Island Course. All told, the Irish carded a second round 313, seven strokes better than their opening round effort. Notre Dame enters the final round of play in third place at 57-over par (633).

Brophy went out in 37, notching six pars on the front to go along with a birdie and a bogey. Then, Brophy played the back nine at one-under par, notching eight pars as well as a birdie on the par-5 15th. She is eight-over par (152) and sits in fourth place entering the final round of play. Brophy’s 72 was an eight shot improvement upon her first round score of 80.

Sophomore Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton) shaved three strokes off her first round total to turn in a second round six-over par 78. Huffer had 12 pars and a birdie on the day but was hurt by three bogeys and two doubles. At fifteen-over par, Huffer is tied for 12th.

Junior So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) carded another nine-over par 81, which also scored for the Irish. Her day was highlighted by a birdie at the par-3 eighth. Park has had success thus far on the par-3’s, as she leads the field by playing those holes at three-under par through two rounds. At 18-over par (162), Park is tied for 18th.

Katie Conway shot a 10-over par 82 to round out the scoring for Notre Dame on Monday. She took five strokes off her day one total and notched a birdie on the par-5 15th. Conway is currently 29th at 25-over par for the tournament.

Sophomore Katie Allare (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) rounded out the Notre Dame squad with a 12-over par 84. Through two rounds of play, Allare is tied for 18th with Park and two other players at 18-over par (162).

Overall, the Irish trail Louisville by 17 strokes and the USF Bulls by 14. On the individual leaderboard, Louisville’s Sara-Maude Juneau leads the field by five strokes after turning in a two-round one-over par total (145).

Third round action of the 2010 BIG EAST Championship gets underway at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, April 20. As the third seed after two rounds of play, Notre Dame’s tee times are slated to begin at 8:50 a.m. The Irish will be playing in threesomes with opposition from both Louisville and USF.
