NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 17th-ranked Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team is ahead of two teams and trailing two teams after the first session of the Shamrock Dual Meet Invitational, which took place Friday evening in the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The meet is being scored as a quadruple dual-meet. Notre Dame is ahead of Oakland, 67-43, and the Irish also lead Connecticut, 81-29. The Fighting Irish trail Penn State, 62-48, and No. 19 West Virginia, 64-46.

The meet is comprised of three sessions, with the final two taking place on Saturday in the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The second session begins at 10:00 a.m. (ET), while the third and final session gets underway at 5:00 p.m. (ET). Heats of both the men’s and women’s 1,650-yard freestyle will be swum Saturday afternoon.

Notre Dame won two of the six events on Friday evening. Senior co-captain Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Western) spearheaded an Irish sweep of the top four spots in the 500-yard free as he touched the wall in 4:31.55. Sophomore Jeff Wood (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport/Indiana) placed second in 4:34.12, followed by Jay Vanden Berg (Holland, Mich./Southfield Christian School) in 4:34.14 and Rob Seery (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) in fourth with a mark of 4:34.31.

Sophomore diver Michael Bulfin (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) continued his fine season by placing first off of the one-meter board with a point total of 339.40. His junior teammate Sam Stoner (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) took second with 305.55 points.

DAY ONE RECAP:

200-Yard Freestyle Relay: West Virginia took first in 1:22.69 and Penn State was second with a time of 1:22.96. The Notre Dame quartet of David Anderson, John Lytle, Louis Cavadini and Andrew Hoffman placed third with a time of 1:23.63.

500-Yard Freestyle: Notre Dame took the top four spots, with Ted Brown claiming the victory in 4:31.55. Jeff Wood was second in 4:34.12, while Jay Vanden Berg was third in 4:34.14 and Rob Seery was fourth with a time of 4:34.31.

200-Yard IM: West Virginia’s Pablo Marmolejo won the event in a time of 1:51.97. Freshman Ross Moore posted Notre Dame’s top finish as he placed fifth in 1:54.18.

50-Yard Freestyle: Andrew Langenfeld from West Virginia placed first in 20.60. Louis Cavadini had the top finish for the Irish by placing 10th in 21.41.

One-Meter Diving: Notre Dame’s Michael Bulfin won with a point total of 339.40, while his teammate Sam Stoner was second with 305.55 points. The Irish took three of the top five spots as Steven Crowe was fifth with 257.95 points.

400-Yard Medley Relay: In the final event of the evening, West Virginia took first in a Rolfs Aquatic Center record-time of 3:17.98. The old mark was 3:19.95, which was established by Western Kentucky in 1999. The Notre Dame unit of Andrew MacKay, Sam Pendergast, Louis Cavadini and John Lylte were fifth in 3:25.04. Right behind them was the Irish quartet of Alan Carter, Daniel Rave, Ross Moore and Ted Brown in 3:29.05.
