Irish In Seventh Place After Second Round Of The Cougar Classic

The women’s golf team improved on day two of the Cougar Classic, shooting a combined plus-four (292) to enter the final round of play in seventh place. Teeing off at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club, the Irish shaved five strokes off their first round total of 297 to shoot a 292 in the second round, for a combined 589. Senior Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute) paced the Irish for the second consecutive day, firing a three-under 69.

Sophomore All-American So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) rebounded on day two to shoot a plus-one 73 in the second round, Notre Dame’s second best score of the day. After two rounds of play, Park is plus-nine for the tournament (153). Teammate Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) cut a stroke off of her first round score to card a plus-two 74. For the tournament she is plus-five (149).

Also scoring for the Irish in round two was junior Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep) who, for the second consecutive day, carded a plus-four 76. Through two rounds, Wetzel is plus-eight (152). Freshman Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton HS) shot a plus-five 77 in the second round, putting her at plus-six for the tournamnet (150).

Maunu’s 69 was tied for the second-lowest round of the day and moved her to minus-two (142) for the tournament. She enters the final round tied for sixth place on the leaderboard. Maunu was one-over par after the first four holes of day two, but posted an impressive minus-four over the final14 holes, including birdies at six, seven, nine and ten to put her at two-under for the tournament. Over three seasons, Maunu has now played eight rounds at the Cougar Classic in her career, posting a 71.7 stroke average (574 cumulative).

Mallory Hetzel of Georgia currently holds the lead, with a minus-seven entering the final round of play. Georgia leads the overall team competition, posting a minus-nine through two days of play (567). The Bulldogs have a 13-shot lead over second place Virginia, who has a plus-four mark (580).
