Irish In Rio: Tancredi Kicks Off Medal Pursuit

Aug. 4, 2016

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Former Notre Dame women’s soccer standout Melissa Tancredi and Team Canada opened the Olympic Games with a 2-0 win over Australia on Wednesday (Aug. 3).

The Group F win came with some drama for Tancredi, who started the match, and her teammates. Janine Beckie scored the fastest goal in Olympic history just 21 seconds into the match giving Canada a 1-0 lead. Then in the 19th minute, Canadian defender Shelina Zadorsky was shown a red card. The Canadian coaching staff was then forced to sub out Tancredi, a striker, in favor of a replacement defender. Tenth-ranked Canada added an 80th minute insurance goal and held on for the win over fifth-ranked Australia.

Tancredi and Team Canada are back in action on Saturday, August 6 with a 2:00 p.m. game versus Zimbabwe (NBC Sports Live Extra).

Today | August 4: No current/former Notre Dame student-athletes are in action today.
