Irish in Rio: Huddle Runs in 10,000 Meters on Friday

NOTRE DAME, Ind. ââ’¬” Action could heat up for Notre Dame alumni competing in Rio on Friday as Molly Huddle runs for Team USA in the 10,000 meters. Huddle won the event at the U.S. Olympic Trials last month.

The Irish fencing program will also be shooting to add to its extensive Olympic legacy on Friday as Gerek Meinhardt takes to the strip with the American men’s foil squad in search of a medal.

Women’s basketball will be a marquee event for Notre Dame fans as Natalie Achonwa and her Canadian countrywomen face Team USA at 2:30 p.m. on NBCSN. Additionally, Irish alum Melissa Tancredi will be playing for Canada as her soccer team faces France at 9 p.m. tonight in a quarterfinal matchup.

The American men’s basketball team, guided in part by assistant coach Monty Williams, will be back on the court tonight at 6 p.m., facing Serbia. That game will be shown live on NBCSN.

Yesterday | August 11

— Sisters Courtney Hurley and Kelley Hurley competed for Team USA in the women’s team epee fencing event, helping the Americans finish fifth. Team USA defeated South Korea, 22-18, in that fifth-place match after falling to Romania, 24-23, in the quarterfinals and then defeating France, 32-28, in the consolation bracket.

— Angie Akers and the Netherlands beach volleyball team of Jantine van der Vlist and Sophie van Gestel lost, 2-1, to Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich and Nadine Zumkehr in their final preliminary match in Group E but still advanced to the medal round which begins on Saturday.

Today | August 12

Gerek Meinhardt will return to action with Team USA’s men’s foil squad. The Round of 16 gets underway at 8:00 a.m. (online streaming), followed by the quarterfinals at 9:00 a.m. (online streaming), the semifinals at 12:15 p.m. (online streaming) and the medal round at 5:00 p.m. (online streaming).

— After sweeping the 5,000 and 10,000 races at the 2016 U.S. Trials, Molly Huddle will run the 10,000 at 10:10 a.m. (NBCSN & online streaming coverage).

Natalie Achonwa and the Canadian women’s basketball team take on the USA at 2:30 p.m. (NBCSN).

— After a perfect 3-0 record in pool play to win Group F, Melissa Tancredi and the Canadian women’s soccer team will take on France in the quarterfinals at 9:00 p.m. (NBC Sports Live Extra).

Amanda Polk will get back on the water as a part of the Team USA women’s eights rowing medal round. The Americans will be in Lace 3 at Lagoa Stadium at 10:06 a.m. going for the gold with coverage available online at NBCOlympics.com

Mariel Zagunas will be participating in the fencing team sabre competition at Carioca Arena 3. Team USA will begin its march to a potential gold medial with an 8 a.m. quarterfinal match against Poland. Coverage is available online at NBCOlympics.com

Margaret Bamgbose will be running for Nigeria as competition begins at 10 a.m. in the 400 meters. Seven heats will be run at Olympic Stadium to whittle the field down to a field of semifinalists for Sunday evening. Coverage will be available online at NBCOlympics.com.
