Irish In Rio: Courtney And Kelley Hurley Take Center Stage

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The action comes fast and furious for six former Notre Dame student-athletes in Rio today (August 6), beginning with Courtney and Kelley Hurley in the individual women’s epee competition.

Preliminary epee bouts start at 8:00 a.m., with the medal round following at 3:00 p.m.

Courtney and Kelley have combined for seven All-America citations, five Olympic appearances, three individual NCAA Championships and two Olympic bronze medals. At the 2012 London Games, they were part of a Team USA squad that earned the bronze.

Today | August 6: Six former Notre Dame student-athletes are in action today.

— Fencing: Kelley and Courtney Hurley are vying for medals in the individual women’s epee competition, which began at 8:00 a.m. The medal round is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. (online streaming).

— Women’s Soccer: Melissa Tancredi and Team Canada are back in action with a 2:00 p.m. game versus Zimbabwe (NBC Sports Live Extra).

— Women’s Basketball: Natalie Achonwa and Team Canada open play with a game against China (online streaming). It will mark Achonwa’s second consecutive Olympic Games appearance.

— Both former student-athletes turned assistant coaches at Rio will open play with their respective teams. Angie Akers and the Netherlands beach volleyball team of M. van Iersel and M. Meppelink will take on a team from Venezuela at 5:30 p.m. (online streaming), while Monty Williams and the U.S. Men’s Basketball team will play China at 6:00 p.m. (NBCSN).

Tomorrow | August 7
Gerek Meinhardt will open his third consecutive Olympics as the men’s foil individual competition gets underway at 8:00 a.m. (online streaming). The medal round is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. (MSNBC).

— Assistant coach Angie Akers and the Netherlands’ other beach volleyball tandem of J. van der Vlist and S. van Gestel opens play at 2:30 p.m. against Canada (online streaming).
