Irish In First After Two Rounds At Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – The pursuit of a second straight win for the Notre Dame women’s golf team is off to a solid start as the squad resides in first place with a six-over par 582 total following the first 36 holes of play at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup. Notre Dame freshman So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea, Bradenton Prep) will enter Tuesday’s third and final round of the tournament in first place with a three-under par 141. The event is being held at the par 72, 6,181 yard Cardinal Club.

The Fighting Irish carded a four-over par 292 in the first round and were three shots off the pace established by Augusta State heading into the afternoon. Notre Dame registered a season-low round of 290 (+2) during the second 18 holes of play to finish the day eight strokes ahead of Louisville, the host school for the event. Augusta State is third with a 592, while Georgia State and Middle Tennessee State round out the top five of the 17-team field with respective scores of 594 and 602.

Park is coming off a runner-up finish at the season-opening Cougar Classic (Sept. 9-11), a tournament the Irish placed first at as a team. She notched rounds of 70 and 71 on Monday and leads Taryn Durham from Middle Tennessee State by one shot. Missouri State’s Missy Linnens is third in the 94-golfer field with a 144 total.

Notre Dame junior Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute) collected medalist honors at the Cougar Classic and her sizzling play continued on Monday. Maunu carded rounds of 70 and 76 to reside in a four-way tie for fifth with a two-over par 146 total. Joining her in that position is her sophomore teammate Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep), who fired a 75 in the first round and came back with a one-under par 71 in the afternoon. Wetzel’s second-round score stands as her top collegiate round.

Sophomore Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) is the third Fighting Irish golfer in the top 20 following the first two rounds of the tournament. Brophy carries a six-over par 150 (77-73) and is currently tied for 17th. Rounding out the Notre Dame scoring was freshman Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), who recorded a 153 (78-75) on the day and is tied for 32nd.
