Irish In Eighth Place After Two Rounds At Lady Boilermaker Invitational

April 9, 2005

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Facing a number of Central Region teams that are competing for a possible at-large berth to the NCAA regionals next month, the Notre Dame women’s golf team currently stands in eighth place after 36 holes at the 13-team Lady Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. The Irish have carded a 35-over par 611 (303-308) and are among a logjam of teams in the middle of the pack (only six strokes separate fourth place from eighth place) in this weekend’s tournament, which is being contested on the par-72, 6,025-yard Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. Northwestern (597, +21) holds a one-shot lead over TCU entering Sunday’s final round.

Junior co-captain Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) is setting the pace for the Irish, tying for 14th place overall at seven-over par 151 (74-77). Senior Karen Lotta (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount HS) is two shots behind her teammate in a 21st-place tie at nine-over par 153 (75-78), while sophomore Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates HS) is one stroke further back in a tie for 27th place at 10-over par 154 (79-75). Sophomore Stacy Brown (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) and freshman Alejandra Diaz-Calderon (Guadalajara, Mexico/American HS) both are tied for 38th place at 12-over par 156 — Brown carded matching rounds of 78, while Diaz-Calderon shot a 76 and 80 in her first career start. Freshman Jane Lee (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula HS) rounded out the Irish lineup in 58th place at 18-over par 162 (79-83). The tournament is being scored in a “six-count-four” format, with the four lowest individual scores in each round being applied to the team total.

Notre Dame will seek to improve its standing in the Lady Boilermaker Invitational when it returns to the links for the final round Sunday morning. Complete results will be available at the official Irish athletics web site (www.und.com), as well as the Notre Dame Sports Hotline (574-631-3000) upon completion of the day’s action.
