NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Fighting Irish women’s golf team shot an opening round 310 at the LSU Tiger/Wave Classic on Friday to place 16th after one round of play at the English Turn Country Club. Sophomore Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton) led the Irish on day one of play with an even-par 72.
Currently tied for fourth, Huffer is part of a group of seven golfers who are at even par. She is just two shots off the lead held by Alabama’s Brooke Pancake and Tessa Teachman of LSU, who each turned in opening round 70’s. Huffer’s first round included three birdies, 12 pars and three bogeys.
Senior co-captain Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) fired a first round two-over par 74 to place in a tie for 16th. She notched an eagle, two birdies, nine pars and six bogeys. Her eagle came on the par-5 second when she reached the green in two and sunk a 10-foot putt.
Senior co-captain Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head (S.C.) Prep School) and junior Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) also saw their scores counted towards Notre Dame’s team score. Wetzel turned in a nine-over par 81 and Conway shot an 11-over par 83.
Junior So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton (Fla.)/Preparatory Academy) carded a 14-over par 86.
Through one round of play, Alabama leads the impressive 23-team field (which includes 11 top-25 ranked squads) after turning in a five-over par 293. LSU is in second at six-over par (294).
The second round of the 2010 LSU Tiger/Wave Classic will be played tomorrow, March 13 and is scheduled to begin with a split tee start at 7:50 a.m. (CST).
