Irish In 11th After Two Rounds At The Central District Invitational

PARRISH, Fla. – The Fighting Irish women’s golf team opened its 2010 spring season with a first round 310 at the Central District Invitational on Monday morning and followed with a second round 308 in the afternoon session to stand in 14th with one round of play remaining at the River Wilderness Country Club. Sophomore Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton) led the Irish with a five-over par 149 two round total to move her into a tie for 14th.

Against a strong field — including seven top-25 ranked teams — Huffer shot a four-over par 76 in the first round. She then took three shots off her first round total to card a second round 73 that included birdies on the second and 11th holes.

Junior Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) had a consistent day for the Irish as she turned in back-to-back four-over par 76’s. Her eight-over par 152 places her in a tie for 30th. She led the Irish squad with six birdies on the day.

Senior co-captains Annie Brophy Spokane (Wash./Gonzaga Prep) and Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, NY/Hilton Head (S.C.) Prep School) each saw both of their rounds counted towards Notre Dame’s team score. Brophy carded an 11-over par 155 mark for the day including an opening round 78. She followed with a 77 in the second round. Wetzel turned in an 18-over par two round total of 162. In the morning session, she carded an 80 and followed with an 82 in the second round.

Junior So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton (Fla.)/Preparatory Academy) rounded out the Irish lineup with a 24-over par 171. She shot an 87 in the first round and followed with an 84 in the afternoon session.

Kelli Shean of Arkansas leads the field with a four-under par 140 total at the Michigan State hosted event, while Florida’s Isabelle Lendlis is one stroke off the pace. Florida leads the field at five-under par, with the next closest team, TCU, standing at 15-over par. The Irish are part of a group of ten teams clustered within 16 shots of each other between 27 and 43 over par.
