CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Competing against a loaded field at the 51st annual Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River, the University of Notre Dame rowing team kicked off its 2015-16 season in style with impressive performances against many of the country’s elite rowing athletes.
The Irish championship four squad (Jill Ryan – coxswain, Katie Skorcz, Elizabeth Gilbert, Gretchen Bruggeman & Ellen Gleadow) was the fourth collegiate team to cross the finish line in their race behind Brown, Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia and Iowa Sunday afternoon. The group placed seventh overall in 18:56.107.
Later in the day, the Notre Dame championship eight boat (Reilly Kearney – coxswain, Hilary Shinnick, Sarah Kappers, Catherine Wagner, Joanna Mulvey, Alexis Olson, Elizabeth Kelley, Katherine Lumetta & Treasa O’Tighearnaigh) took 13th in 19:26.258.
On Saturday a boat of all Notre Dame alums (Abby McQuiston – coxswain, Ching Ting Hwang, Katie Suyo, Kelsey Haddad, Stephanie O’Neill, Megan Keegan, Erin McConnell, Carol Ann Michel & Morgan Kelley) placed 23rd (19:26.235) in the women’s alumni eight race.
Elsewhere, a pair of former Irish standouts had a winning Sunday, as Molly Bruggeman (’14) and Erin Boxberger helped lead the winning US Rowing championship four team that completed the 4,800-meter course in 17:33.793.
Notre Dame closes out its fall slate at Ohio State November 7, where the Irish will compete against the Buckeyes, Michigan State and Indiana in an exhibition regatta.
