Irish Impress On Day Two Of Weekend Tournaments

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Notre Dame picked up eight singles victories on Saturday during day two of the OFCC Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill. Senior Blas Moros and junior Greg Andrews, both captains, won two matches each to pace the squad.

Joining Moros and Andrews with morning victories were freshmen Alex Lawson and Quentin Monaghan. Moros took down Illinois’ Brian Page, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, while the No. 24 Andrews topped ranked foe No. 118 Farris Gosea of Illinois, 6-1, 6-4. Lawson continued his strong weekend with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Pepperdine’s Damian Gryzelko, while Monaghan did the same with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over Pepperdine’s David Sofaer.

In the evening session Moros, senior Spencer Talmadge, sophomore Wyatt McCoy and Andrews earned victories. Moros rolled past No. 63 Mousheg Hovhannisyan of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-1, while Andrews topped his second ranked foe of the day as he beat No. 99 David Holiner of Texas, 6-3, 6-1. Talmadge defeated Illinois’ Julian Childers in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-3, while McCoy went to three sets, eventually earning a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Brian Page of Illinois.

Vredevelt Invitational

KALMAZOO, Mich. – Three singles victories and a doubles victory highlighted day two for the Irish at the Vredevelt Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Saturday. Freshman Kenny Sabacinski won a pair of matches to get his rookie campaign off on the right foot.

Sabacinski picked up the lone singles win for Notre Dame on Saturday morning as he took down Jord van der Vloet from Cleveland State, 6-2, 7-5. Sophomores Michael Fredericka and Dougie Barnard both took their respective foes to third-set supersets before falling in close sets.

In doubles Fredericka and Nicolas Montoya rolled past Bandy and Krull from Xavier, 8-3.

In the evening session Sabacinski knocked off Michael Tenzer of Green Bay, 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) and Montoya beat Green Bay’s Erik Finkenbrink, 6-3, 6-2.
