Irish Impress In Inaugural Bob Harris Open

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame track and field program hosted its first home meet at the Harris Family Track and Field Stadium on Saturday with the Bob Harris Open.

The Irish posted 13 first place finishes on the day, seven on the men’s side and six from the women’s team.

Hatherly-Piane Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Matt Sparks was pleased with the boost the home meet gave the team.

“It’s been since 2006 since we last hosted a meet,” said Sparks. “A lot of things changed in the world so we figured this would be our chance to change things up. There was a lot of excitement from our kids that I didn’t expect. We compete every weekend but the energy from our kids was great. Across the board there was a vibe in the air amongst our team that we don’t get on the road.

“We had limited capacity so the crowd was mainly parents, student-athletes and other students. It will be exciting in the future to see what we can do with a crowd without the limitations. It was a pretty good crowd for the limited capacity.”

One of the highlights of the day was the performance of the men’s javelin duo of Austin Parsons and John Keenan. Parsons won the event with a personal record of 67.49m, the second best mark in program history. Keenan threw a distance of 67.02, the third best mark in Notre Dame history.

The men’s hammer throwers took the top five spots, with Logan Kusky winning the event (65.69m) followed by Jamar Manning (PR 59.63m) and Blake Kusky (57.97m).

The women’s throwers won three of four events, with Gabe Diederich (45.23m) winning the javelin, Maura Kimmel (53.30m) taking the discus and Rachel Tanczos (62.86m) placing first in the hammer throw.

On the track the women’s middle distance runners turned in some notable performances. AnnaSophia Keller (2:10.40) won the 800m and Elena Denner (4:43.32) crossed first in the 1,500m.

On Friday night some members of the men’s distance team competed at the GVSU Extra Weekend Meet in the 5,000m. Dylan Jacobs won the event with a personal best time of 13:42.78, the fourth best mark in program history. Andrew Alexander took third place with his PR of 13:43.28, the fifth fastest time in ND history and Josh Methner posted the eighth best mark in program history with a PR of 13.52.11.
