Oct. 19, 2011

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Fresh off a win at the Dennis Stark Relays and victories over TCU and Oakland last weekend, the Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team returns to action on Friday when it plays host to perennial power Auburn in a 2 p.m. dual meet at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.

The Irish (2-0) defeated TCU (173-127) and Oakland (207-93) last Saturday. Sophomore Kelly Ryan picked up a pair of wins in the 100 and 200 backstroke, while Amy Prestinario (200 free), Lauren Stauder (200 breast), Jenny Chiang (1-meter dive) and the 200-medley relay team composed of Sarah Dotzel, Emma Reaney, Lauren Scott and Hannah Bowen also earned victories.

The Tigers, who ended the 2010-11 season ranked fourth in the country, finished third in the Southeastern Conference last season and eighth at the NCAA Championships. Overall, they have won five national championships. They defeated Notre Dame, 197-101, last season in Auburn, Ala.

This season, the Tigers (1-0) are undefeated after they knocked off SEC-foe Arkansas in a dual meet on Oct. 5 to open the season.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Barnes is quite familiar with the Tigers’ program as he was an assistant coach at Auburn from 2006-2008, helping the men’s and women’s teams to national titles in both 2006 and 2007.

Friday’s meet is free for fans or can be followed via live stats on UND.com.
