Irish Hold Strong On Day 2 At Western Michigan and Arizona State

KALAMAZOO, Mich. & TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team concluded another strong day of competition Saturday, combining to go 9-2 in singles and 3-3 in doubles while split between tournaments at Western Michigan and Arizona State.

Bronco Super Challenge

The Irish were once again successful in Kalamazoo, posting a 3-1 mark in doubles and singles. Senior Brooke Broda and freshman Ally Bojczuk, Bojczuk and classmate Caroline Dunleavy, and Broda and freshman Evangeline Shannon were each victorious on the doubles court.

In singles, No. 123 Brooke Broda downed Indiana’s Natalie Whalen, Dunleavy defeated Western Michigan’s Barbare Eristavi, and Bojczuk bested Cleveland State’s Isabella Spindler.

Play will conclude Sunday with one round of singles beginning at 9 a.m. ET.

ASU Thunderbird Invitational

After going 4-4 in singles on Friday, the Irish put in an undefeated day on the court Saturday at Arizona State.

Cameron Corse and Allison Miller each won a match in the Maroon Draw consolation bracket. Corse defeated Oklahoma’s Christiana Brigante, while Miller downed California’s Maria Smith in straight sets.

In the Sparky Second Round Consolation Draw, both Zoe Spence and Rachel Chong advanced to the final after winning two matches each. Spence defeated San Diego’s Maria-Paula Torres (6-3, 7-6(4)) and Oklahoma’s Malene Stripp (6-3, 6-2), while Chong downed a pair of California opponents: Jasie Dunk (7-5, 6-3) and Vivian Glozman (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). The two will face each other as play concludes Sunday.

Joanne Norell, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2014 and coordinates communications efforts for the Notre Dame men’s tennis, women’s tennis and fencing programs, in addition to overseeing production of the football Gameday Magazine. Norell is a 2011 graduate of Purdue University and earned her master’s degree from Georgetown University in 2013.
