Irish Head To Hawkeye Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s swimming team will travel to the Hawkeye Invitational (Dec. 11-13) hosted by the University of Iowa at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool to end the first half of the 2011-12 season. Live results for the event will be available at UND.com.

The Irish divers will compete at the Ohio State Invitational over the same span.

“We’ll be facing some elite competition this week,” Irish head coach Tim Welsh said. “We need our team to swim very well to would like to see how much they’ve improved this semester.”

No. 10 Iowa will also play host to Denver, Michigan, Wisconsin-Green Bay and Wisconsin-Milwaukee. South Dakota State will be competing in the diving events.

Michigan is ranked No. 1 in the latest CSCAA poll as the Irish are receiving votes. The Wolverines handed Notre Dame (4-3) a 174-119 dual-meet defeat on the opening weekend of the season.

Notre Dame capped off a successful fall semester with a second-place finish at the 2010 Hawkeye Invitational. Only the host Hawkeyes (1,177.5) placed higher than the Irish (822) in the seven-team field.

Frank Dyer blitzed the field with a meet-record time in the 500 freestyle (4:24.04) to secure an individual victory with the NCAA B-standard.

Dyer would go on to boast a silver-worthy showing in the 200 freestyle (1:37.10) for a second NCAA B-cut.
