MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – A pair of Notre Dame doubles teams reached the round of 16 to highlight action from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Men’s Region IV Championships Thursday in at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The Irish tandem of junior Brett Helgeson (Overland Park, KS) and junior Santiago Montoya (Austin, TX) opened the main doubles’ draw with a thrilling 9-8 (6) victory over Peter Rispoli and Alex Sanborn of Northwestern. Helgeson and Montoya then cruised past Pierre Dumas and Sebastian Gallego of Minnesota, 8-3. Helgeson and Montoya, 3-1 on the year, will now face Drew Eberly and Justin Kronauge of Ohio State Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
The senior duo of Sheeva Parbhu (Omaha, NE) and Andrew Roth (Houston, TX) recorded a pair of convincing victories. Parbhu and Roth opened action with an 8-4 triumph over Sven Burus and Knot Likitkumchorn of Toledo. They followed up that impressive performance with an 8-5 win over Brett Binkley and Mark Rutherford of Marquette. Parbhu and Roth will play Matt Allare and Mike O’Connell of Ohio State Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
The freshman team of Tyler Davis (Nashville, TN) and Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, OH) improved to 4-1 on the season with a 9-8 (5) victory over Jared Miller and Jay Miller of Toledo, but the duo was unable to move into the round of 16 after losing their next match to Jason Jung and Mike Scroczynski of Michigan, 8-3.
Freshman David Anderson (Sandwich, MA) and freshman Matt Johnson (Portage, MI) dropped a hard-fought match to Andy Lockhart and Sebastian Lystad of UIC, 9-7.
Freshman Dan Stahl (Bethesda, MD) reached the round of 16 in qualifying singles after his victory over Matt Parks of Michigan, 7-5, 6-3, but he fell short of the main draw. Stahl lost in straight sets to Eduardo Pavia of Ball State, 7-6, 6-1.
Sophomore Sean Corrigan (Lido Beach, NY) dropped his round of 32 match to Vanja Grugec of Depaul, 6-2, 6-3.
The ITA Midwest Men’s Region IV Championships continues at Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center on Saturday with main draw action in both the singles and doubles.
