BEALLSVILLE, Md. – The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team claimed second place Monday after day one of its final fall tournament, the 28th annual Georgetown Intercollegiate at the Members Club at Four Streams.

The Fighting Irish (290-286-576, +8) will enter the final 18 holes one stroke off the pace set by the University of Toledo, who fired a matching score of six-over par, 290 in the morning before carding a 285 in the afternoon (290-285-575, +7).

Senior Paul McNamara III (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) led the way for Notre Dame with back-to-back rounds of even-par 71 (71-71-142) to stake a share of fourth place. McNamara began his first round with consecutive double bogies in his first two holes but rebounded nicely, pacing the field with an impressive 12 of Notre Dame’s tournament-high 34 birdies over his final 34 holes.

Junior Niall Platt (Santa Barbara, Calif.) shaved two strokes off his score during the afternoon 18, improving upon an opening 73 with an even-par 71 (73-71-144) to tie for 10th place after 36 holes.

Sophomore Tyler Wingo (Fairfax, Va.) continued his solid stretch with a one-under 70 to join Platt at 144 (74-70). Wingo logged eight birdies over his two rounds to close his day within six shots of the lead at two-over par.
