BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team went a perfect 4-0 on the final day of the Indiana Invitational on Sunday at the IU Tennis Courts. Over the span of the three days of competition, the Irish reeled in a total of 15 wins.
With doubles play wrapping up in Saturday’s sessions only singles play remained on the final day of competition. Sophomore Jennifer Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) returned to flight one for her final matchup of the tournament, knocking off Abilene Christian’s Julia Mongin in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to finish with a 2-1 mark overall.
Junior Chrissie McGaffigan (Davenport, Iowa) ended her tournament on a high note as well, returning to flight two and dispatching Marketa Trousilova of Kansas State, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Britney Sanders (Ontario, Calif.) also competed out of flight two on Sunday, fighting back for a hard-fought three set victory over Kansas State’s Ana Gomez (2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5)). Much like Kellner, both McGaffigan and Sanders finished with 2-1 records.
Sophomore Julie Sabacinski (Plantation, Fla.) concluded the perfect day for the Irish, earning her first win of the tournament after taking down Indiana’s Sophie Garre, 6-4, 7-5 in flight three. Sabacinski ended the weeked with a 1-2 mark.
Seniors Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) and Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.) are next to take to the courts for the Irish when they head out to Pacific Palisades, Calif., for the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships (Oct. 1-9). Each will compete in the singles draw along with teaming up to participate in the doubles draw.
