Irish Gear Up For 2010 Spring Season At Alumni Match Weekend

Feb. 4, 2010

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s golf team will prepare for the upcoming spring season with an Alumni Match weekend at the Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Irish will play a team format in which current players will compete with and against Notre Dame alumni in attendance. Rounds will be played on Saturday, Feb. 6 and Sunday, Feb. 7.

“We’re looking forward to kicking off our spring campaign with a trip to Scottsdale where we’ll compete against a group of alumni golfers at the spectacular Mirabel Golf Club,” said Irish head coach Jim Kubinski. “It’s really a perfect setting and will be a great test of golf. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about Mirabel and I think our entire team is excited to visit and start competing.”

The Irish concluded the fall season with a 36-34 head-to-head record and ranked 65th by Golfstat (December 2, 2009). The fall campaign was highlighted with a home win at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, as the Irish bested runner-up Ohio State by four strokes. Senior Josh Sandman (Greensboro, N.C.) took home medalist honors at the event, marking his first career win with the Irish.

Now the Irish are looking to build some momentum and get back into competition mode as they head into the NCAA Championship portion of their schedule.

“We’ll certainly enjoy the competition against members of our Notre Dame family,” added the sixth-year head coach. “Of course, we’ll also have an eye on kicking off our spring season in Newport Coast, California next week. This trip should be part positive interaction between our current student-athletes and our alumni, part fun and spirited competition and part preparation for the championship segment of our season.”

Notre Dame’s 2010 spring season gets underway on Sunday, Feb. 14 when the Irish tee it up at the Battle at the Beach in Newport Coast, Calif. The three-day event will take place at the Pelican Hill Golf Club and will be co-hosted by UCLA and Long Beach State.
