Irish Forward to Undergo Surgery

June 29, 1999

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – University of Notre Dame sophomore forward Troy Murphy has been diagnosed with a hernia and will undergo surgery in the next seven to 10 days. Murphy is expected to recover fully from the procedure and will be sidelined from basketball activity for approximately four weeks.

As a result, Murphy will be unable to attend the trials for the United States Junior World Championship team, which opens this Saturday on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz. Murphy was one of 16 finalists for the 12-man squad, along with incoming Notre Dame freshman guard Matt Carroll. That team will play in the FIBA Junior World Championship tournament, which will be held in Portugal in mid-July.
