The University of Notre Dame rowing team finished second in a thunderstorm-shortened Dale England Cup at Lake Lemon in Bloomington, Indiana, on Saturday afternoon.

The regatta was originally scheduled for two racing sessions on Saturday but the participating teams, Notre Dame, No. 16 Indiana, No. 17 Duke and San Diego, adjusted the schedule in anticipation of inclement weather. The teams attempted to move the first session of races to Friday evening, but the storm system forced cancellation of Friday night’s races.

The weather system then delayed racing until after 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. The teams were able to get one full session in before San Diego was required to head to the airport to catch a flight back to campus.

The highlight of the day for the Irish was the performance of the First Varsity Eight. The Irish finished second (6:39.12) behind Indiana (6:35.6), but outdistanced Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Duke by five point four seconds. The outcome is a positive indicator for the boat heading into the ACC Championship on May 15.

HEAD COACH Martin Stone

On the overall effort of the team today…

“I thought that racing went well today. We continued to show improvement and speed. I thought our team handled the delay and uncertainty well.”

His thoughts on specific races…

“Our NCAA boats raced well today. The Varsity Eight race was tight until the final 200 meters. I thought the Second Varsity Eight made a great push to get back in front of Indiana, then Duke made a good push to get the victory.”

“Duke jumped out to a lead in the Varsity Four but we can back to make it a competition. They were defintely better than they were two weeks ago at Ohio State and I think you can say that for all of our boats.”
