Irish Finish Hot To Tie For Eighth At Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Shooting a season-best round of 296 (+8) is how the Notre Dame women’s golf team concluded the 2006 fall slate on Tuesday afternoon during the third and final round of the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate. The Fighting Irish placed in a tie for eighth with a three-round total of 914 (308-310-296) at the par 72, 5,953-yard Oak Point Golf Club. Campbell University won the tournament with an 879 (+15).

Notre Dame senior Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) tied for sixth overall after carding the team’s top round of the season, a two-under par 70 to finish with a 219 (73-76-70), which was also the best mark for the squad during the fall.

The second round of the event concluded on Tuesday morning after being suspended due to darkness on Monday evening. The third round was played immediately after the conclusion of round two.

Campbell registered the low round of the tournament with a two-under par 286 during the third round to take the tournament with an 879 (295-298-286) total. East Tennessee State finished 10 shots in back of the Camels and in second place with an 889 (301-293-295).

Taking home medalist honors was Steffi Kirchmayr from the College of Charleston, the host school for the tournament. She posted a 54-hole score of 214 (69-72-73), while East Tennessee State’s Laura Jansone was the runner-up with a 216 (77-70-69). They both fired a three-under par 69 during the tournament, which was the low individual round for the two-day event.

Fighting Irish sophomore Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Collegiate Parkside Institute) matched a career-best 18-hole score with her third round tally of 71 (-1) to conclude the tournament tied for 27th with a 227 (78-78-71). Junior Jane Lee (Atlanta, Ga./Peninsula (Calif.)) shot a 234 (78-79-77) to place in a tie for 54th overall out of the 99-golfer field.

Freshman Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) notched a three-round total of 237 (82-77-78) to tie for 67th, while her classmate Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep) was two shots behind with a 239 (79-80-80) and in a tie for 73rd.
