Irish Finish Competition at Northwestern Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Notre Dame fencing team concluded their weekend at the Northwestern Duals with the men’s team going undefeated on the day. They took down University of California San Diego (UCSD), University of Incarnate Word (UIW), the Air Force Academy, Boston College, Stanford, and Lawrence. The women’s team beat the Air Force Academy, UCSD, and UIW throughout the day. 

The men’s team took down UCSD 18-9 with the epee group goin 4-5, saber going 6-3 and foil dominating 8-1. Jonathan Hamilton-Meikle, Ziyuan James Chen, Hans Wei Shen Yoong, and Sean Moon all completed perfect 3-0 bouts. The women’s team posted a win against UCSD later in the day when they won 24-3. Michaela Joyce, Nicole Pusilnik, Neve Harrison, Kaitlyn Hulseburg, and Emily Chang all went 3-0 throughout the match.

They also beat UIW in a dominating fashion, 26-1. Hamilton-Meikle, Hunter Candreva, Z. Chen, Chase Emmer, Marcello Olivares, and George Bivins all posted 3-0 undefeated wins throughout the match. 

The women’s team fell to Northwestern and Cornell but made their comeback against the Air Force Academy, 23-4. Pustilink,Chang, Harrison, and Hulseburg went 3-0 in the match. The men’s team also posted a win against Air Force, 21-6. The epee squad posted a 6-3 record, saber a 7-2 record, and foil a 8-1 record. Joshua Zhang, Z. Chen, Olivares, Moon and Bivins all went 3-0 against the Fighting Falcons.

The men posted two more wins on the day against Boston College and Stanford. The Irish took down Boston College, 18-9 with foil and saber posting 5-4 records and epee dominating 8-1. Hamilton-Meikle posted an undefeated record in the match. The Stanford match ended with an Irish win, 19-8. The epee and saber groups both finished the match with 6-3 records and the foil squad took a 7-2 record. Maruan Osman-Touson, Jack Oursler, and Jared Smith all finished the match with 3-0 records.

The Irish finished the day on a winning note when the men’s team took down Lawrence 26-1. The saber squad finished with an 8-1 record and the foil and epee team posted undefeated 9-0 records. Yoong, Philip Dority, Oursler, Osman-Touson, Stephen Ewart, Jared Smith, and Henry Nadile all posted 3-0 records in the match. The women’s team also won against UIW 19-8. Foil and epee posted 7-2 winning records and the saber squad won in a close match 5-4. 

The Irish are back on the road next week when they head to Durham, North Carolina for the Duke Duals on February 10 and February 11.
