NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing teams both went 3-0 Saturday as the Irish hosted the Midwest Duals, held in the Langford Fencing Gym. With many of the reserves seeing the majority of the action, Notre Dame topped three area club teams – with victories over Indiana (22-5 men, 23-4 women), Michigan State (20-7, 25-2) and Purdue (24-3, 27-0).

(Note: additional notes from last week’s NYU Duals have been added to the und.com recap for that event; see that link for bout details of those key matchups vs. several of the nation’s top teams; the NYU Duals recap also now includes complete team stats for the event.)

The day was highlighted by the women’s foilists, as juniors Melanie Bautista and Rachel Cota and senior Colleen Walsh all turned in perfect 9-0 records. Sophomore sabreist Ashley Serrette and senior epeeist Anna Rodriguez also finished 9-0, with senior Eleanor Leighton registering an 8-0 record in her epee bouts.

For the men, senior epeeist Patrick Gettings, sophomore epeeist Karol Kostka both went 9-0, as did senior Ryan Bradley and sophomore Tom Horton in men’s sabre. Sophomore foilist Alexander Grigorenko won each of his eight bouts.

Several notable Irish fencers did not compete this weekend, among them senior sabreists Valerie Providenza, Patrick Ghattas, Matt Stearns and sophomore sabre fencer Bill Thanhouser, as well as foilists Emilie Prot, Adrienne Nott, Frank Bontempo, Jakub Jedrkowiak and Mark Kubik.

RECORD BOOK UPDATE – With her 12-4 record at last weekend’s NYU Duals, Providenza climbed to 17th place on the career wins list for all ND women’s fencers … her career win total of 164-29 mark (.850) is second all-time among ND women’s sabreists and she needs two more wins to tie former teammate Destanie Milo (166-36/.822) for first place … senior epeeist Amy Orlando’s career record of 153-49 (.757) puts her at 23rd on the all-time ND women’s fencign wins list (9th among epeeists) … Ghattas’ career record of 148-17 (.897) puts him at 20th on the all-time wins list for Notre Dame men’s fencers (9th among sabreists) … also joining him in the top 50 for career men’s fencing wins are senior foilist Bontempo (141-66, .681; 26th among all weapons, 9th among foilists), Stearns (129-39, .768; 38th) and junior foilist Jedrkowiak (115-29, .799; 49th) … senior epeeist Aaron Adjemian (116-47/.712) is 47th on that list while junior epeeist Greg Howard (111-29/.793) cracked the century mark at the NYU Duals and is 52nd on the all-time list.
