Irish Fencing Opens Dual Slate Undefeated

COLUMBUS, Ohio — In its first dual competition of the season Sunday, the University of Notre Dame fencing program took an important step in defending its national title, with both men’s and women’s squads earning 5-0 records at the Elite Invitational at Ohio State.

The Irish women defeated Ohio State (17-10), Penn State (16-11), North Carolina (22-5), Princeton (20-7) and Northwestern (16-11), while the men downed Ohio State (19-8), Penn State (20-7), North Carolina (19-8), Princeton (15-12) and Penn (18-9). The women’s scheduled match against Penn will be contested at a later date.

For the Irish women, senior epeeist Amanda Sirico led the way with a 10-1 on the day, while juniors Morgan Partridge and Samantha Viquiera and sophomore Stefani Deschner went 8-1 in foil. Freshman Kara Linder posted a 9-3 mark in sabre, while classmate Miriam Grady notched an 8-4 record in epee.

The men were led by a 14-1 mark by sophomore foilist Nick Itkin, while freshman squad-mate Andrew Machovec went 12-3 on the day. Freshman sabreur Alessandro Contreras was 10-1, while classmate Malcolm Fields went 9-1, also in sabre. Senior foilist Axel Kiefer went 7-1 in three matches.

Members of the Irish fencing team will compete as individuals at U.S. Fencing North American Cup events in December and January before returning to the collegiate arena January 19-20, 2019, at the St. John’s and Philadelphia Invitationals, held on consecutive days in Queens, New York, and Philadelphia.
