Irish Fencing Kicks Off National Title Defense At Western Duals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame fencing team opens up its 2012 regular season Saturday when it takes part in the Western Duals at the Falcon Gym on the campus of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The one-day event features only the Irish men’s team, as they square off with a total of six opponents.

The first bout of the day for Notre Dame gets underway at 9:15 a.m. (MT) against Cal Tech. Following that are matches against UC San Diego (10:30 a.m.), Swarthmore (12:15 p.m.), Air Force (1:30 p.m.), Florida (2:45 p.m.) and Stanford (4:00 p.m.). Each match will feature a typical dual-match format that sees each weapon compete in nine bouts with one point awarded per bout victory.

All told, 13 men’s fencers made the trek west for the Irish. Competing in men’s epee will be James Kaull, Michael Rossi, Jack Piasio and Dale Purdy. Men’s foil is comprised of Reggie Bentley, Enzo Castellani, Nickolas Kubik and Nicholas Crebs, while men’s sabre will send Alexander Coccia, Keith Feldman, Jason Choy, Kevin Hassett and William Meckling to the strip.
