EVANSTON, Ill. – The top-ranked Notre Dame men’s fencing team posted a 5-0 mark on the first day of the Northwestern duals, while the second-ranked women’s team recorded a 6-0 record. The men are now 13-0 on the season, while the women stand at 12-2.

The men posted wins over Johns Hopkins (23-4), first-ranked Penn State (14-13), Northwestern (20-7), Cleveland State (24-3) and 10th-ranked North Carolina (21-6). The women recorded wins over John’s Hopkins (25-2), top-ranked Penn State (19-8), eighth-ranked Temple (19-8), Farleigh Dickinson (24-3), Lawrence (25-2) and Wayne State (23-4).

Two of the more important matches of the day were Notre Dame’s bouts with rival Penn State. The men, currently tied atop the USFCA Poll with Penn State, found themselves in a tight contest against the Nittany Lions. Holding a late 13-11 lead, head coach Janusz Bednarski and his staff inserted a late substitute in the form of Jacob Osborne (Colleyville, Texas) into the epee lineup. The sophomore responded with a match-clinching win over James Moody. Osborne had fallen behind 4-3 in the race to five touches, but rattled off the next two touches for a 5-4 win, sealing Notre Dame’s defeat of Penn State.

The women, currently ranked second behind Penn State, toppled the Nittany Lions with a dominating 19-8 win. Against Penn State, The Irish had one fencer post a 3-0 record in each discipline, including epeeist Ewa Nelip (Katowice, Poland), foilist Hayley Reese (Crestwood, Ky.) and, in sabre, Eileen Hassett (Beaverton, Ore.). One of Reese’s wins in the bout came against 2007 National Champion Doris Willette, while Hassett had an impressive 5-2 win over Caitlin Thompson.

The Irish return to the strip tomorrow, February 1 for day two at the Northwestern Duals. The women’s slate begins with an 8:00 a.m. match-up with Cleveland State and ends with a 1:00 p.m. tilt against Midwest Fencing Conference rival, and third-ranked, Ohio State. The men begin with a 1:00 p.m. battle versus Wayne State and also end their day versus third-ranked Ohio State.
