Irish Fencers To Play Host To 2010 Notre Dame Duals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Fighting Irish fencing teams are set to play host to the 2010 Notre Dame Duals on Feb. 6 and 7 inside the Joyce Center. Action is slated to begin at 8:00 a.m. on both days and to conclude at 5:00 p.m. The schedule of matches will be identical for both days, with the women’s teams fencing on Saturday and the men’s teams fencing on Sunday. Admission is free of charge.

The Duals will have a distinct Midwestern feeling to them as the other 12 teams participating include the University of Chicago Maroons, the Cleveland State University Vikings, the University of Detroit Titans, the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, the Indiana University Hoosiers, the Lawrence University Vikings, the University of Michigan Wolverines, the Michigan State University Spartans, the Northwestern University Wildcats, the Purdue University Boilermakers, the Wayne State University Warriors and the University of Wisconsin Badgers. This weekend’s competition is highlighted by Northwestern’s fifth-ranked women’s team and Wayne State’s men’s epee squad, which features three-time defending NCAA Champion Slava Zingerman.

Last weekend, the second-ranked Notre Dame men’s fencing team posted a 12-0 mark at the Northwestern duals to improve to 22-0 on the year. Dating back to 2008, the men have not lost a match in their last 66 regular-season contests, which is the fourth longest streak in program history (third best stretch was 90 consecutive wins from 2000-04).

The Irish women, who are also ranked second, went 14-0 at the Northwestern Duals to move to 24-0 on the year. Dating back to last season, the women have won 48 consecutive regular-season matches, which is the second longest unbeaten stretch in program history (best stretch was 75 consecutive wins from 1993-96)

The Notre Dame Duals will serve as the final regular season event of the 2010 season for the Irish.
