NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing teams each added five more wins to complete an undefeated showing at the Notre Dame Open, in Sunday’s final rounds of action at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse.

The day’s highlight victories included a 20-7 win for the second-ranked Irish men over eighth-ranked Air Force while the seventh-ranked Irish women posted a spirited 17-10 win over sixth-ranked Northwestern.

The Notre Dame women proved that last week’s 14-13 victory over Northwestern was not a fluke, with the Irish epeeists winning five of nine bouts (after going 1-8 vs. the Wildcats at last week’s Northwestern Open). The win over Northwestern hinged on a series of nine one-point bouts, with the Irish winning eight of those close results (including all four in epee) to provide the final margin of victory.

The Irish women continued dominating the day, with other victories over Purdue (23-4), Minnesota (24-3), Air Force (20-7), Michigan (20-7), and Lawrence (23-4) to push their season record to 17-3.

The women’s epee squad was led by sophomore All-American Meagan Call, who went undefeated against Northwestern (10-4 for the day, 26-4 for the weekend) while improving to 44-11 in 2001 and 81-28 for her career.

Sophomore All-American foilist Liza Boutsikaris (9-0 Sunday, 22-1 weekend, 44-11 season, 79-13 career) also went undefeated on Sunday while Maggie Jordan continued her impressive freshman season (10-1, 20-3, 38-9).

The Irish women’s sabre team continued its dominance, led by sophomore All-American Natalia Mazur (8-0, 17-0, 28-7, 77-11), senior captain Carianne McCullough (7-0, 17-0, 26-4, 68-16) and freshman Destanie Milo (9-1, 18-1, 33-5).

The Notre Dame men kept their undefeated season intact (20-0) with victories over Purdue (21-6), Minnesota (23-4), Air Force (20-7), Northwestern (16-11), Michigan (20-7) and Lawrence (21-6).

The Irish received a dominating performance from their men’s epee team against a strong contingent from Air Force, with Notre Dame winning eight of the nine bouts. The epee squad received a 9-1 day from sophomore All-American Jan Viviani (20-1 for the weekend), who improved to 30-3 for the season and 62-10 for his career.

The men’s foil squad received a 3-0 day from sophomore All-American Ozren Debic as he pushed his season record to 29-1 (69-4 for his career). Junior foilist Steven Mautone reached a career milestone with his 100th career victory, going 4-1 on Sunday (he is 100-38 overall). Sophomore Forest Walton won all seven of his bouts for a 13-1 weekend (he now is 25-9 for the season and 59-16 in his career).

The sabre squad kept rolling with an undefeated day by sophomore Matt Fabricant (9-0, 17-1, 32-1, 55-5), defending NCAA champion Gabor Szelle (6-0, 12-0, 27-2, 124-7) and junior Andre Crompton (7-0, 15-1, 31-5, 96-14).

Next week’s Duke Open (Feb. 9-10) will include a rematch with Air Force and also a matchup with a talented Stanford squad which boasted the best foil squads for both men and women at the 2000 NCAA Championships. The Irish men head into the Duke Open riding a 36-match winning streak and could post the program’s longest winning streak since a 50-match streak from 1990-93 by defeating their first two opponents next weekend.
