Irish Fall To Virginia, 7-4, But Rebound To Beat IUPUI, 7-0

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Fighting Irish men’s tennis team split a pair of home matches on an eventful Sunday inside the Eck Tennis Pavilion. In their first match, Notre Dame dropped a 7-4 decision to second-ranked Virginia, but the Notre Dame rebounded to post a 7-0 win over IUPUI in the nightcap.

Junior David Anderson (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and Sophomore Sam Keeton (Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) led the way for the Irish, as each player recorded two singles wins and Anderson chipped in with a doubles win as well. After one weekend of play, the Irish now stand at 2-1 on the season.

Virginia Recap
In the morning session of singles play, which featured positions seven, eight, nine and ten, Virginia took a 1-0 lead with a win from Philippe Oudshoorn at No. 7 singles. Oudshoorn defeated junior captain Tyler Davis (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan) 7-5, 6-3. Notre Dame rallied to take a 3-1 lead as the Irish claimed the other three morning singles matches. Anderson downed 80th-ranked Steven Eelkman Rooda 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). In the tie breaker, Anderson never trailed as he jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held on for his first career win against a ranked opponent.

Keeton earned a straight sets win at No. 9 singles over Virginia’s Santiago Villegas 7-5, 6-3. Then, in the only morning match to reach a third set, junior Matt Johnson (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) outlasted Julen Uriguen. Johnson, who was making his dual season singles debut for the Irish, cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set but Uriguen rallied from a 4-3 deficit to take the second set, 7-5. In the third set, Johnson held serve to go up 5-3 and then broke Uriguen for the win.

Entering the afternoon singles session (positions 1-6), Notre Dame held a slim 3-2 advantage due to Virginia winning the doubles point. Virginia tied the overall match at 3-3 when third-ranked Michael Shabaz defeated 93rd-ranked Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, Ohio/Hill Christian School) 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Then 12th-ranked Sanam Singh defeated 18th-ranked Casey Watt (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2 to give Virginia a lead (at 4-3) that it would not relinquish.

At No. 3 singles, UVA’s 16th-ranked Jarmere Jenkins defeated sophomore Niall Fitzgerald (Wicklow, Ireland/Blackrock College) 6-2, 6-4. Then 74th-ranked Blas Moros fell to 58th-ranked Houston Barrick 6-2, 6-4. At No. 6 singles, freshman Michael Moore (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) fell to 28th-ranked Lee Singer 6-4, 6-4.

At No. 4 singles, Irish junior Daniel Stahl (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) battled it out with 31st-ranked Drew Courtney. Stahl, currently ranked 95th, took the first set 7-6 (7-2) only to see Courtney take the second set 6-4. In the third, Stahl got out to a 6-5 lead but Courtney came back to force another tie breaker with the set tied at 6-6. Stahl proved victorious in the breaker, 7-5, for his highest win against a ranked opponent.

In doubles play, Virginia earned the point as they won at the No. 1, 3 and 4 positions. After Keeton and Stahl were defeated at No. 3 doubles by the 17th-ranked team of Singer and Courtney, Havens and Fitzgerald tied the doubles match with a win at No. 2 doubles. After falling behind 3-2, Havens and Fitzgerald rolled off six consecutive wins to take the match. UVA earned its second doubles point when Eelkman Rooda and Oudshoorn defated the Irish team of Sean Tan (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) and Spencer Talmadge (Hillsborough, Calif./Junipero Serra) by an 8-5 margin. Virginia clinched the point with a come-from-behind win at No. 1 doubles as Shabaz and Singh knocked off Davis and Watt in a close match 9-8 (7-3). Anderson and Moros completed their own comeback at No. 5 doubles when they overcame a 7-4 deficit to claim a 8-7 (7-3) win over Uriguen and Villegas.

IUPUI Recap
After winning the doubles point, the Irish took a 2-0 lead when David Anderson defeated Malcolm Peace in straight sets at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Then at No. 6 singles, Keeton won in straight sets over Taylor Tunis 6-4, 6-0. Moments later Havens clinched the win at No. 1 singles with a win over Deion Schafer 6-1, 6-1. Moore earned his first career dual season singles win with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Nick Volz. At No. 4 singles, Davis outlasted Joel Modesitt 6-4, 6-4 to give the Irish a 6-0 lead. Then, at No. 2 singles, Moros pulled through with a 6-4, 6-4 win to complete the Irish sweep.

Notre Dame also swept doubles play versus the Jaguars. At No. 1 doubles, Havens and Davis teamed up to take down Deon Shafer and Nick Volz 8-2. Then, at No. 2 doubles, Talmadge and Tan defeated Daniel Klingenberg and Bren Vasalakis, 8-3. At No. 3 doubles seniors Patrick Callaghan (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) and Takashi Yoshii (Tokyo, Japan/The American School in Japan) knocked off Joel Modesitt and Taylor Tunis 8-4.

The Irish hit the road next weekend to take part in the 2010 ITA Kickoff Weekend. Notre Dame will take part in the Ohio State regional in Columbus, Ohio. Action begins on Saturday, Jan. 30 when the Irish face Tulsa at 1:00 p.m. Then, on Sunday, Jan. 31, Notre Dame will play either Ohio State or New Mexico. The winner of the regional will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Boar’s Head Sports Club, hosted by the Univ. of Virginia on Feb. 12-15.
