NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Fighting Irish men’s tennis team split a pair of home matches on an eventful Sunday inside the Eck Tennis Pavilion. In their first match, Notre Dame dropped a 7-4 decision to second-ranked Virginia, but the Notre Dame rebounded to post a 7-0 win over IUPUI in the nightcap.
Junior David Anderson (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and Sophomore Sam Keeton (Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) led the way for the Irish, as each player recorded two singles wins and Anderson chipped in with a doubles win as well. After one weekend of play, the Irish now stand at 2-1 on the season.
In the morning session of singles play, which featured positions seven, eight, nine and ten, Virginia took a 1-0 lead with a win from Philippe Oudshoorn at No. 7 singles. Oudshoorn defeated junior captain Tyler Davis (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan) 7-5, 6-3. Notre Dame rallied to take a 3-1 lead as the Irish claimed the other three morning singles matches. Anderson downed 80th-ranked Steven Eelkman Rooda 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). In the tie breaker, Anderson never trailed as he jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held on for his first career win against a ranked opponent.
Keeton earned a straight sets win at No. 9 singles over Virginia’s Santiago Villegas 7-5, 6-3. Then, in the only morning match to reach a third set, junior Matt Johnson (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) outlasted Julen Uriguen. Johnson, who was making his dual season singles debut for the Irish, cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set but Uriguen rallied from a 4-3 deficit to take the second set, 7-5. In the third set, Johnson held serve to go up 5-3 and then broke Uriguen for the win.
