Irish Fall to Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The #12 Fighting Irish traveled to Vanderbilt in a weekend matchup where the Irish fell to the Commodores 14-12. 

Madison Ahern and Madison Mote both led the team with three goals each. 

Kelly Denes led the team with 10 draw controls while the team as a whole won 17. 

Diana Kelly caused four turnovers and the Irish caused 12 throughout the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Irish opened the contest with back to back goals from Madison Ahern, putting the Irish up 2-0 within the first three minutes of the game. A third Irish goal came from Madison Mote to give the Irish a 3-0. Cailin Field and Kasey Choma would each find the back of the net to give the Irish a 5-2 lead. With the clock winding down in the first quarter Mote scored again to increase the Irish lead 6-3. 

The second quarter had Vanderbilt fighting back for the lead as they put three more goals on the board to tie things up. The Irish responded with a goal from Ahern at the last minute of the half to give them a one goal lead, 7-6.

The third quarter saw the Commodores tally the first goals to take the lead 8-7. Notre Dame responded with the equalizer from Mote before Vanderbilt tallied their ninth goal. Hannah Dorney found the ninth goal for the Irish. The Commodores took the lead again to end out the quarter 10-9.

In the final quarter, Jackie Wolak put the Irish on the board on a free position attempt making the score 11-10, Vanderbilt. The Commodores kept their lead at 12-10 with just over eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Both Wolak and Dorney scored in the final minutes to give the Irish an offensive burst bringing Notre Dame within one 13-12. The Commodores responded to make the eventual final score 14-12.
