Irish Fall to No. 11 Georgia Tech

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish fell to No. 11 Georgia Tech in Purcell Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 30 in three sets (12-25, 23-25, 19-25 ). The Irish drop to 5-8 on the season as they prepare for the Clemson Tigers on Sunday, Oct. 2 at home. 

Kaylyn Winkler and Paris Thompson led the Irish tonight with eight kills a piece, followed by Lauren Tarnoff who finished with six kills and four blocks. Setter Phyona Schrader recorded 23 assists and 13 digs for Irish.

After falling to the Yellow Jackets 25-12 in set one, the Irish weren’t going down without a fight in set two. It was a close set to start as the Irish only trailed by one at the 8-7 mark. While Georgia Tech extended their lead to 14-8, Notre Dame was able to close the gap to five at 17-12 and brought it within four after a Winkler kill and Yellow Jacket error at 18-14. The Irish brought it within one at 20-19 and after swapping points, it was an even 22-22 set. Despite the Irish’s late efforts, the Yellow Jackets would take home set two 25-23.

The Yellow Jackets had just a one point advantage at 6-5 to start the third, but went on to extend the lead to 10-6. Notre Dame outscored the Yellow Jackets 6-3 to bring it to one at 13-12, but Georgia Tech’s offense was too much as they took the lead 22-14. The Irish would close the gap to five at 22-17, but the Yellow Jackets went on to take the third and final set.
