Irish Fall to NC State on the Road

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish fell to NC State in three sets (20-25, 17-25, 23-25) in their second matchup of the year against the Wolfpack.

The Irish were led by Lucy Trump and Avery Ross who tallied 10 kills a piece for Notre Dame, followed by Kaylyn Winkler with five kills. Setter Phyona Schrader dished out 25 assists and libero Hattie Monson recorded 13 digs. 

Set One

The Irish and Wolfpack played a close set to start. Tied at 6-6, NC State was able to take a 9-6 advantage, but a kill from Avery Ross and a block from Ross and Winkler closed the gap to one at 10-9. The Wolfpack was able extend their lead to five at 20-15, and a 4-0 run sparked by a Ross kill brought the Irish within one again at 20-19. Trump would get in one more kill for Notre Dame, but NC State would score five of the final six points to take home set one 25-20. 

Set Two 

Notre Dame took an early 6-3 lead over the Wolfpack, but seven straight points from NC State allowed them to take the 10-6 advantage. Down seven at 17-10, the Irish had a kill from Paris Thompson and an ace from Trump to help close the gap to four at 17-13, and force an NC State timeout. The Wolfpack closed out the set with an 8-4 run to win set two 25-17.

Set Three

Similar to set two, the Irish posted an early 8-6 lead in set three. It was an even set at 12-12, while both teams swapped points until the 18-18 mark. The Wolfpack took the lead 22-21 and an ace from Thompson tied it yet again at 22-22. Tied at 23-23, NC State would score the final two points and take set three 25-23.
