Irish Fall to Florida State in ACC Opener

Tallahassee, Fla. –  The Fighting Irish fell to Florida State in three sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-17) in their first ACC matchup of the year on Friday, Sept. 23. Notre Dame dropped to 5-6 on the season and 0-1 in the conference as they head to Miami on Sunday to face the hurricanes.

The Irish played a close first set, swapping leads with the Seminoles until it was an even set at 11-11. Florida State took the lead at 16-11, but a kill from Lucy Trump and two aces from Maisie Alexander brought it within two at 16-14. FSU responded with a 7-1 run to take the lead 23-15 and while the Irish would close the set with four straight points to bring them back within four, the Seminoles would close out the first 25-20.

Notre Dame trailed early in set two as the Seminoles captured a quick 7-2 lead. While the Irish closed the gap to two at 7-5, Florida State continued to put the ball away and extended their lead to 14-9. Scoring eight consecutive points, FSU had a 22-9 lead, but the Irish weren’t done yet. Notre Dame went on a 9-2 run to close the gap to six at 24-18, but simply ran out of time to comeback as the Seminoles took home their second set of the night 25-18.

The Irish and Seminoles played a close third set, with neither team being able to pull away early. Notre Dame trailed at 14-8 before two kills from Avery Ross, an ace from Hattie Monson, and a Florida State error made it a two-point set at 14-12. However, the Seminoles responded with a 9-3 run to take the 23-15 advantage, and the eventual 25-17 win.

Notre Dame was led tonight by Clare Delaplane with nine kills, followed by Avery Ross who tallied six kills. Setter Phyona Schrader dished out 19 assists and libero Hattie Monson recorded 10 digs on the night.
