Irish Fall To Denver In NCAA Championship Quarterfinals

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Mikey Wynne tallied a hat trick but the fourth-seeded Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team fell to fifth-seeded Denver, 16-4, in the NCAA quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Hofstra University.

How It Happened

Notre Dame opened up the scoring on Saturday, scoring the opening goal just over three minutes into the first quarter, as Sergio Perkovic found Mikey Wynne right in front of the Denver crease. Wynne fired low and beat the Pioneers goalkeeper to give the Irish the early lead. Denver fought back, scoring the last two goals of the opening 15 minutes to hold a 2-1 advantage after the first frame.

The Pioneers took over the second quarter, outscoring Notre Dame 6-0 to open up a seven goal advantage heading into the halftime break at 8-1.

Wynne scored his second goal of the game in the third quarter but unfortunately for the Irish the Pioneers tacked on five more scores to increase their lead to 13-2. The Pioneers went on to win by a final score of 16-4

Notre Dame Offensive Player Of The Game

Wynne posted his sixth hat trick of the season, scoring three goals against the Pioneers. The junior finished the season with a team-high 33 goals and now has 106 in his three years with the Irish. Wynne has scored more than 30 goals in all three of his seasons at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame Defensive Player of the Game

In the final game of his Notre Dame career senior Garrett Epple caused a career-high five turnovers and scooped up a team-best seven ground balls for the Irish. The defenseman finishes the season with a team-high 27 caused turnovers on the season.

  • Notre Dame played in its eighth straight NCAA quarterfinal game, the most of any program in the country.
  • The Irish played in their 12th consecutive NCAA Championship and are one of two programs to have an active streak that long.
  • Notre Dame now has an all-time record of 19-22 in the NCAA Championships.
  • The Irish finish the season with a record of 9-6.
  • Wynne wrapped up the season with a team-best 31 goals and now has 104 in his three years with the Irish.
  • Sergio Perkovic scored a goal and finished his career with 111 goals, the most of any midfielder in Notre Dame history.
